You've watched one too many tv shows/movies

a full impact on the rear can do more damage to yourself (and passengers) than you think, eg whiplash
If you were struck at speed from the rear, there's a chance you won't be able to drive either since depending on how fast the impact was you could well be in trouble (concussion) as well

one more thing, fuel tank is at the rear, there's a chance it'll get damage in a full impact (read speeds over 60) bu commowhore

Having had two cars written off by rear end (female driver) collisions, I can say that there is a strong likelyhood that the car's rear chassis gets pushed into the rear tyres, thus ending your quick getaway.
