Doff Doff Help Needed :)

Hey All

This question goes out to all the big bass people out there....

In my 04 wrx - i plan to run 4 amps (2x1507s and 2 other smaller ones for in car spwakers).

I got a 15 Farad Capacitor - 2000 joules and was wondering if i still need a second battery?

Im running the biggest yellow top optima i can fit under the hood!!

any advice or thoughts would be appreciated

Cheers

Chris

as long as you have an adequate capacitor, as it sounds like from the 15 farad one you were talking about, you shouldn't need a second battery. You pretty much need 1 farad for every 50amps you are drawing out of your battery.... as an idea i had a 3 farad cap to run all the shit i used to have in the libbo and had no big issues running enough to make 133db.... comes down to setup the system right the first time and over compensate where possible and you shouldn't have any problems dude.

i'd get a second battery and ditch the capacitor. caps are just a band aid to poor wiring. doesn't have to be as big as the battery in the front but sticking with same brand/ type is a good idea.

I usually reccomend a second battery for anyone running over 1000wrms to stabilize the voltage. also means when your bored, you can sit in the car listening to music and do a bit of tuning without the engine running.

The main problems with having big power is your grounds and your altenator. I'd have a close look on how to ground each amp properly and upgrade the wire from the altenator to the battery. as well as your engine bay earths.

You can go a secong battery but yeah trust me way too much hassle. To do with one way switch's so on and so for. Stick with what you have and it will be a winner.

As for the biggest i would prob go a d35 or the d71 either one is an awesome battery with above 650cca respectively.

Enjoy

make sure you have a good alternator or at least budget for a replacement when it gets toasted haha.. I had about 1600w RMS driving 4 x 15" subs and 2 pairs of splits and the stock battery and alternator were good enough to hit 151db with no caps... but the alternator only lasted about another 3 months til i had to replace it with a beefier 140amp one IIRC

hahashaha - nah dude nothing that extreme - 4 x 15" - hear much these days?

Chris, your gonna need all the power you can get, 1507's (aka Boogie boards) draw heaps of current. I would advise you to also get a 2nd battery cause you will need it. I previously ran 2 x MRV-1507's & 2 x MRV-F409 amps with a 1000cca Odyssey & Alumapro 5 farad cap, the power system struggled to cope & my headlights stilled dimmed etc

I still have my Alpine Special edition F1 Status MRV-F409's if your interested in matching amps.

Here are some pics of the system from my old car.

alpine love! that's an awesome install lew ;)

if i was you i would get a second battery, no question about it, ive been told by my installer to try and match them for size as different sized ones might not charge evenly. im about to swap one yellow top optima for a smaller 800cca odyssey and see how it goes, i might throw the other optima in aswell and have three. currently with the two and four caps it still struggles, altinator is next on the cards.

also, as mentioned, wiring is the key to a big power system so don't take any shortcuts if you can. few photos of my install, enjoy.
