Custom Painted Helmets

Can anyone point me in the right direction of someone who I can talk to about airbrushing a helmet?

Cheers

Not sure on exactly how you get round keeping your helmet compliant and painting it but clearly it can be done. Have always wanted a custom painted rally style helmet.

Be carefull of putting stickers on the actual fibreglass part of the helmet as I have heard that this can also make the helmet not comply. Need to pull out the CAMS manual and check. But would only really affect you for serious CAMS events. Wouldn't have any dramas at the drags and other smaller track days.

Yeah a subi version of this would be very cool.

If you do paint or put stickers on it has to be to compliant to manufacturers guidelines to retain CAMS approval. I'm pretty sure CAMS officially sanctions it if the painting treatment and stickers dont compromise the surface treatment of the helmet.

If need be I'll dig out a manual and check it.

Maybe they remove the Australian Standards sticker when they airbrush making them unsuitable for competition use.

I remember doing the IWRXOC end of year event a couple of years back at the speed dome. Sonia Harrington (for those who know of her) had a helmet which was given a coat of harlequin paint. When this was done, teh standards sticker was removed and they would not allow her to drive with it. She still had the standards tags inside, but the one on the shell was removed.

I know that she has artistic flair and did some air brush work, she may be able to help you out.

There are mobs over east who can do it, have seen articles in car mags.

You cant just pull out a can of paint and spray a helmet!!!! :nono: You have to get it done by a pro who will pull it appart and paint it to the correct standards.

If you use a pro helmet painter they mostly only work with new white helmets and charge a lot more for a old or pre painted one because of all the prep work required. The helmet will be able to be used for competition CAMS because the painter will have the paper work for the helmet.....

It will cost you $500 to $800 for a shmick paint job that is original an looks awsome plus the cost of a new motorsport helmet $500 to $1500.

If you are a tight ass and do it on the cheap you put your self at risk :nono:
(if you have a $2 head then wear a $2 helmet) most people are happy to spend $1500 on car mods but balk at that for a helmet???????

I have raced Karts, Rally & Motocross and have had my share of crashes, so dont skimp on helmets....

P.S if you have a smash in your helmet or drop it on the road or a hard surface then throw it away because they only work once. :D
