The MOMO wheel on the 99/00 is an airbag wheel. If it is fitted to your car I am pretty sure you legally have to have it operational which involves alot of headaches for fuck all benefit.
Your car is an MY98 and was not factory fitted with an airbag which leaves you free to fit an aftermarket wheel if you wish. If your car was factory fitted with an airbag and you remove it then there is issues with insurance etc but not in your case.

You can fit the wheel without the air bag inside the centre.
Just buy one that is all complete and pull the bag out.
The point was if you were looking at a momo you can fit any off the shelf momo as you didn't have a air bag from stock.

Doesn't matter either way, just gives you some choice in style of wheel.
And they (if ADR approved) will be just as legal as the 99-00 momo.

I know it's been covered before but if u have a nardi wheel, 2 pot brakes and car was built in early 1998 as your was then you have a MY98.
If in any doubt ring a Subaru dealer with the VIN they will soon tell you what MY it is.
As for a wheel I would just look at aftermarket momo.
Too many iffy legal issues with airbag or converted airbag wheels.
