Sure, syncing music and videos with your PC is do-able now with an intermediate device such as an ipad/ipod/iphone, but if you don't own one of those devices and never intend to, it would most certainly be handy to have a wifi capable deck in the car.

Edit: What Jeckle said...

Cost of wifi in a unit + network setup + leaving car on whilst network syncs vs buying a cheap ass usb drive and copying it over that way?

WHS^^^ simply add an extension of the USB/SD card out the back, bring it to the front, and use a $40 35GB USB, drag and drop that shit, save yourself some $$ and time....plus, as mentioned, you can take it with you, less theft target etc...

You're right. It's definitely got its downside and would take some development to make it ideal... but in this day and age, the need to have to have a "cheap ass usb drive" and "copy it all over" is obsolete and redundant.
Is that not the whole reason for automatic syncing and the whole cloud concept?

I'm not saying it's a viable option, just simply trying to answer your question as to why someone might want it.

Oh for sure. Pete had it in his bug with the custom car-pc. Had a lot of potential.

I think that would be the only way of making it viable though. Off the shelf unit from Alpine etc would be a lifetime away.

Now if someone could get my iphone/ipad/ipod to natively sync to a deck over bluetooth eliminating a cable there, then we are winning.

The reason I thought it was a good idea was that I am on the road a lot for work, having full proper internet capabilities with a wifi system properly set up in the vehicle would save me a lot of lugging around as well as being able to update my stuff on the go easily, the idea of having all of my music there connected straight away would be an added bonus. I guess If I can have the Ipad there for work as well as leisure then I'm killing two birds with one stone, the other options is buying the ipad and then buying a double din audiovisual setup. Seems silly if I can do both with one.
