Head unit recommendation

Hi all

Was interested in people's experiences with high end head units. Have a pioneer unit purchased for ~1300 a few years ago which had a hard drive, nice graphics and iPod compatibility but its likely it won't be iPhone 4 compatible as a patch had to be used to make it compatible to iPod touch (about 3-4 years go)

Links would be appreciated too.

Cheers
Russ

Go with what I did. Alpine X305 Head unit. It is CD-Less, Digital Only Single DIN. Has Blue or Red backlight with full Ipod Integration and heaps of inputs/outputs. You can add a CD Stacker if you wish. However the best thing I find is the modular function.

By this I mean if you want bluetooth... or GPS... or TV... or Internet Radio or whatever, Alpine makes other small modules you can buy seperately later and just plug them into the head unit to keep expanding the functionality. So the head unit only cost me I think about $200 from Ebay (Legitimate with Warranty Receipts), and I will soon buy the bluetooth kit which looks to cost about $150.

Took me 1 hour to install it into my GC8 - Easy Peasy ;)

EDIT - Not sure how the single DIN would do TV or GPS - but thats the modular system. Perhaps there is a double din version that costs slightly more which can do it.

Thanks guys
Syncsubaru that sounds pretty good. Budget am happy to spend 1-1.5k but want something that produces reasonable output, maybe cd player but def plug the iPhone into for most of the music. Am a sucker for cool screen/visuals but don't use it for tv/ps3 or Bluetooth.
Only reason I did this is went for a cheaper pioneer unit for the cutlass and was disappointed. USB jack broke pretty quickly and developed some quirks.

what about just buying a fm transmitter? i got one of ebay for like 8 dollars and works perfectly

Yeah - Pioneer develops static noise over time too, the grounding is not so good and the feedback ends up in your ears :P

+1 for the Alpine x305. It has 3 rca outputs so you can use for a high end sound system as well. It is real easy to balance and EQ. Just simple and looks good. I have it in mine and bought another one and put it in my partner's car

DNGRUSS 30-03-2012 12:50 AM

Spence I'll have a look. Do you have any probs with crackling/transmission delay? I'm a nut for audio quality, at home my stereo has to be my fav possession. If it works well you can't go wrong for 8 bucks
Ta Syncsubaru I'll check out those links. Much appreciated.
