Another reason ive been told of that is an issue with bonnet scoops on n/a cars is only when a hole is cut in the bonnet underneath an aftermarket scoop, which alters the structure and compromises the strength of the standard bonnet.

From what i understand, cars with factory scoops have their bonnets reinforced around the hole, therefore a factory wrx bonnet shouldnt be an issue there.. Though the whole sealing of the scoop could well be a problem, im not sure at all. Ive had a fmic for years now, and had many police look under my bonnet, but the fact that theres no top mount to complete the seal has never been mentioned to me.

That may be correct.
'Seal' in this case does not refer to the fit to the intercooler but 'closed off' so that flames or blowback from the engine bay cannot get out.
That is why the 2 vents on the GC model hood/bonnet are each closed with a sealing plate. They are removed when off road for better ventilation. Solution- just install a metal blanking plate under the scoop, paint it matt black so it is not obvious.
Exactly that. The seal stops fluids / flames from possibly escaping in the case of a blown hose or engine. Even some evos which have the vented bonnets are blocked off for this reason.

Now I'm not saying it's gospel but it's worth checking out if you wanna keep it legal. And no I wasn't assuming. This is what I was told.

Agree, looked at carbon fiber parts to replace front end from kangaroo damage and the shatter thing is what stopped me. On that note I'd say a carbon one may give them a reason to slam you but a plastic one should be no dramas.. 02-05 sti scoops look mean on gc8s. Oh, and for the turbo only and seal talk, I call bullshit on the grounds of all the scooped winged wrx wannabe exels seem to be accepted

ive been pulled over in other cars having open bonnet scoops (was on the car when i bought it) and have had no issues with cops. they say it may void the insurance incase your engine blows or a pipe explodes and it causes a safety issue by allowing it to come out.

however i have a mate that works in midland police station and he has said cops have no right to birdie you for a bonnet scoop as long as its structurally sound (bolted in correctly). he didnt say if you had to cover it, but he recommends you do incase blowby or engine failure and it comes out the middle of the scoop (smoke everywhere) and causes you not to see.

so by that its mainly a safety issue but they have no backup to birdie you for it!

Maybe your mate is a cadet still in training? A cop can canary a car for anything he/she suspects to be unroadworthy. Its the cops opinion, it doesn't even have to be correct. It's then the inspection centre (the pits) who inspects it and makes the decision to approve (and issue permits if requested).
