Default Car Stereo System Price

Just wanting a more experienced persons input in regards to the price quoted.

Yesterday I went to Alberts Car Stereo in Morley and inquired about a supply and install of a stereo system for my WRX. I was quoted around $2600 for everything. This was based on 2 12" subwoofers that will be installed in the side of the boot in enclosed custom boxes, two amps and a set of speakers for the front doors. Brand discussed being used was Rockford Fosgate. Dynomatting of the doors and boot was also included.

He was spurting a lot of details I really didn't understand in regards to the amps but he did suggest I could run the whole system of one amp if I wanted to bring the cost down. Is this a good idea or is it best to have a separate amp for the speakers and another for the subs?

I plan to go a couple of other places to get some more quotes but would like a more knowledgeable persons input to what sort of price is reasonable.

Boxes are similar to this setup.

I'm currently in the process of building my own stereo system from the ground up, in a different fashion to yours, but is it something you'd consider doing yourself? The money I'm saving by installing everything (all new wiring/sound proofing/etc), is allowing for better quality through out.

I really don't have the skills or the confidence to do it myself unfortunately.

Dynamat installation is generally quite expensive, as the installers consider it quite labour intensive. I was quoted $600 just to do the front and rear doors and rear shelf.

Custom fiberglass boxes can also be quite time consuming, and that may also be a factor in the price.

Also, I'd suggest running 2 amps as you said, 1 for the speakers, and 1 for the subs.

Are you also upgrading the head unit, or have you already done that?

Not upgrading the head unit I already have a Alpine Double Din head unit which I am happy with.

Also, I am not wanting to have a giant sub box in the boot, hence the need for the side installation of the sub woofers.

Shallow mount JL Subs. They need as little as 14 litres internal volume.

You can get a box of the large sheets off ebay for $200ish delivered, if you have the tools/time/patience to get the trims off yourself, then you can save a lot of money.

RAAMaudio - Automotive sound deadening products

Can't give you a Dynamat comparison, but I'm sitting here and a sheet of the RAAMaudio deadener is sitting besides me, and it's damn good stuff.

EDIT: And just to your remark about having the skills or confidence to attempt it, I am by no means a car audio wizard or fabrication expert. Admittedly, I used some basic electronic principles I picked up in my BEng to help me a bit, but in terms of putting it all together, YouTube is your best friend!
