has anybody done this before? assuming its not a direct plug in?

I enquired about doing this in one of my Subarus. Apparently a very big job, and even the car's ECU is responsible for controlling the system AFAIK.

From what I have been advised, it is not worth doing, even if you had the time and money to blow.

Yes i have, it is quite easy. You only need to connect the power and illumination wires. It seemed to work fine without the ambient and engine coolant temp sensor wires connected. You will need a dashloom though to splice the climate control harnes out of it
