stopping cracked paint from worsening
 

Hi All

A couple of weeks ago some idiot school mum in a 4x4 too big for the city (another topic for another day) reversed into my wrx. The towbar bent in the front of my bonnet. hardly a huge dent and ive all but bashed it out, but the wench also cracked the paint in a line about 20 cm long. The cracked paint lifts away from the bonnet, and it will definately chip off either through washing or polishing and probably just wind shear as well

Unfortunately i wasnt with the the car... my wife had driven it and she said it was either the first car driving out of the spot, or the one who reversed in. either way we dont know who and nobody owned up. so getting them to pay is out of the question. she didn't even know it happened, i only discovered it when i popped the bonnet that night.

TL;DR

Is there a way i can glue down or otherwise protect the paint to stop it worsening until I get a respray?

Post a pic or alternately use touch up paint/clear lacquer. Another idea may be to get some clear contact and cut a piece to make it look as if its a paint protector.

If undertaking the touch up pain/clear path remember to use both sparingly.

Really hard to help out without seeing what you're talking about.

Here's what it looks like, I imagine a similar result as if you were to roll guards without heating the paint...

The white marks below the crack are from the towbar... and the car is absolutely filthy :p

If you have something 'piece of wood etc that's the same shape as the inner side of the bonnet', you could place it along the inside edge of the bonnet and with slight pressure ease out the edge 'this will close up the the paint edge'. If you try this apply pressure, check edge after every time.

You could also use the same method above but tap the outside ridge down 'I wouldn't recommend this unless you know what you're doing as you might end up making the damaged area worse'.

Alternately clean with wax and grease remover and apply clear contact.

I tried the wood trick but the position makes it really difficult :/ it's a bit hard to see even in person but I think there is a slight kink around the crack that is covered on the inside by the bracing.

Thanks for the tips, I'll have a real good look this weekend and see if I can work it some more from the inside and then contact it.

Maybe try to fill it with clear nail varnish and then polish out what sits on the surface?

i've tried clear nail varnish before on a small spot where my clear coat is coming off to try and hold it back. It looks ok for a short while, but it soon discolours and looks crappy after time :(
