Default 2016 WRX radio reception problem

Yes, I am going on 61 this month and still listen to AM radio when driving around the city. My son told me some of you might want to take the piss, but I don't mind.
I bought a base model WRX 12 months ago and have been very disappointed in the radio. The sound is quite poor and the radio reception, particularly AM, dismal. The antenna is the shark fin type that sits on the roof, just above the rear window.
When I had the car serviced I asked the Dealership to check the radio but they said there is nothing wrong with it.
I have raised this issue with Subaru Australia, which has been quite receptive, but has yet to offer any solutions.
I'm wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems and if they have been able to do anything to improve the reception. Any advice you can offer will be much appreciated (offensive comments excepted).

I can't offer any firsthand experience as I don't listen to radio stations and don't own a newage WRX, but there are powered antenna signal boosters available for cars that might provide an improvement to the quality of your reception. Most car audio places should be able to supply and install (Only ones I know of are the likes of Alberts Car Audio and Audio Precision, but other forum members might have some recommendations based on their experience).

Get a head unit that supports DAB radio, or if yours has DAB start using that instead of AM, DAB has majority of the am stations available on it and they are super clear

using the Perth-WRX mobile app

As above - two options. DAB head unit or signal amplifier. I don't listen to the radio but my MY08 gets shithouse reception even with an aftermarket unit and OEM roof antenna. I am yet to set up and try my new DAB antenna though.
