Painting Sideskirts

I have decided to paint the sideskirts on MY00. I want to know if anyone else has done this, and if so what did you do with the rubber strip that goes between the body and the skirt? Paint it? bin it? or leave it black?

Also has anyone painted the factory moulded mud flaps? I don't know whether to paint them or leave them off.

Any advice is appreciated
Scott.

Take the rubber edging off while painting then put them back on and leave black.
Thats what I did and it looks fine.

As far as painting the rubber moulded flaps goes it is a bit more tricky. I decided
to get rid of mine after finding out that the following.
1. To get done professionally it is more expensive.
2. To do it yourself you need a special paint additive in the colour matched
spray pack to allow the paint to move with the rubber.

Good luck.

Cheers for that guys. Did you do them yourself? Use plastic primer etc?

Also is there any reason why you haven't painted the little black plastic trim at the rear of the skirt? And what the hell is it for?

Hurtenstein 01-01-2007 07:58 PM

Nah I bought mine like that. heaps better than black IMO. And i think that black bit is where the muddies go upto, coz it'd look funny with a painted edge, then flaps. dunno.

Little bit at the back is hard to get off, and also it is in a rock strike zone
so VERY subject to paint chipping.

Yes I did the skirts myself. There is another thread around on this, but
basically...
1. Read colour code from your engine bay. WRC blue is 74F.
2. Find someone who will make up spray paks of matched paint.
3. Remove skirts, sand lightly with wet/dry paper.
4. Use a plastic primer. Get it from same place that sells you the paint.
5. Use several light coats of paint.
6. Seal with clear coat.

As I mentioned, have a search around as this had been covered
more in another thread... :D
