Airport Express setup

Just bought one of these, but not 100% sure how to get it up and running. My setup at home is basically a Windows 7 PC which connects wirelessly to a D-link wireless router. So anyway I've plugged the AE in and the PC is detecting it, but then things go a bit crazy. If I create a new wireless network the current one drops out and I lose internet access. I end up with new wireless networks 1 = the DLINk which I can connect to & get the internet the other is the new wireless network I've created which means I can connect to the AE, but no internet access. And yeah IRTFM  You help prease.

I was under the expression the Apple Airport Express was plugged up via Ethernet to make / strengthen your wireless network. If you already have a wireless modem, Apart from wireless printer sharing or sound sharing, I would struggle to see the point of having it.. Unless they have changed since I last had one (3 or 4 years ago)

It's got a jack in it so you can connect a stereo and stream music through it. My music sits on the PC.

It sounds like you are trying to create a new wireless connection rather than add to your existing connection.

Run the wizard again, this time when it asks you if you want to create a new wireless connection, say no and choose join an existing network.

Follow the prompts, you will be fine

Are you using airport express ("AE") setup utility to setup the AE?

Without ever doing this:

I'd turn wireless off on the D-link.
Plug AE into the D-Link router.
Setup AE with the D-Link as the default gateway (i.e. D-link as 192.168.1.1, AE as 192.168.1.2).
If you use DHCP have one of the devices look after that (pref the D-link).
Hopefully plug and pray.

All aboard the microsoft lets do it the hard way boat.

This is a top quality Apple product John, you plug it in and it works without any (much) fucking around.

My dog was able to setup our last AE, it's so easy, all what has happened is perthzed has chosen to create a new wireless network rather than join an existing. 2 minutes of running the AE Config tool and that bad boy will be pumping out itunes and cancer causing 802.11 signals

Well that's good to know!

Do you have to turn off the main router wireless though, or do both run in a repeater style setup? Might be handier to pug the AE in a different room to give more coverage in the house.
