Gran Turismo Network Setup

Follow all the steps in this guide to set up your network for playing Gran Turismo (or any PS3 game for that matter).
Looks like a lot, but should only take about 10 to 15min to complete.

On your PC, Click ‘Start’

In the search box above type:
cmd
and hit enter

A black box will pop-up. In this box type:
ipconfig
and hit enter

This will display your current network settings.
The comment you’re looking for is the “Default Gateway”
Write this number down. You’ll need it later.
Listed as 192.168.1.254 in the example below but yours may be different.
Other common examples include 192.168.1.1 and 10.1.1.1

Close the black box.

Open your web browser and type your Default Gateway number (that your wrote down) into the address bar. This is the IP address for your router.
(eg 192.168.1.254)

Enter your routers username and password when prompted.
If you do not know your username and password then try here:
Router Passwords - PortForward.com

Normally, when a device in your home connects to the router for internet access (wired or wireless), the router will assign the connecting device an IP address. The router will also make sure it does not assign an IP address that is already being used by another device on your network. This means the router is running a DHCP server.

Look for the DHCP Server option in your routers configuration. May look something like this:

In the above example the router’s DHCP server range is 192.168.1.1 up to 192.168.1.40
This means the router can automatically assign up to 40 different IP addresses. This range varies from router to router. We want to make sure we use an IP address for the PS3 that is outside this range.

In this example we will use 192.168.1.50 (but any IP address that ends with 41 to 253 will be OK in this example)

Look for the DMZ option in your routers configuration.
For example;

Enter the chosen IP address into the DMZ option (192.168.1.50 in the example)

‘Apply’ or ‘Save’ the changes to your router.

Good idea at this point to power cycle the router, log back into it and check the DMZ address setting has been saved.

On your PS3 from the main XMB Menu select ‘Settings’
Scroll down and select ‘Network Settings’
Select ‘Internet Connection Settings’

A prompt will appear explaining your need an Ethernet cable connected or wireless available to proceed.
Select ‘OK’
Select ‘Custom’ method

Chose your connection type. Wired or Wireless
Use Ethernet (Wired) if at all possible.

Select Manual Settings
Select Auto-Detect (Check FAQ at the bottom of more troubleshooting info)
Select Manual IP address setting.

At this screen you will need to enter the following:
IP Address – The IP address you set in the router’s DMZ
Subnet Mask – 255.255.255.0
Default Router – The ‘Default Gateway’ IP address you noted early in this guide.
Primary DNS – 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS – 8.8.4.4

Select Automatic MTU
Select Do Not Use Proxy server
(If you are using a proxy, by all means enter the details of course. If you’re not sure if you’re are using a proxy, you probably don’t

Select Disable UPnP
With DMZ set you don’t need UPnP. So make sure the PS3 doesn’t still try to use it.

You should then be shown a summary of your settings. Click X to proceed.
Your can now run an internet connection test. (Click x)
Your summary should look like this (although connection speeds will vary)

That’s it. You should be good to go.

FAQ

My PS3 still randomly drops out of the game and PlayStation Network (PSN)
You may see the notification in the top right of screen pop-up saying you have logged out of PSN, or a message like ‘An Ethernet cable is not connected’. It will also commonly reconnect also most immediately. This is likely due to the console briefly dropping local connectivity between the PS3 and the router.

Go through you’re your PS3 network settings again, only this time manually select your Speed and Duplex. Most home networks will be safe with 100BASE-TX Full-Duplex.

Why do I need to assign an IP address outside the DHCP server range?
Two reasons:
1. Some routers (depending on model or firmware) will not allow traffic to go unimpeded through the DMZ if the IP address is with the DHCP server range. The router may let you set an IP address within the DHCP server range in the DMZ without complaints, but the router (unbeknownst to the user) may not actually apply that rule internally and traffic to the DMZ may be blocked.

2. To ensure it’s impossible for the router to assign another device on your network the same IP address as the one the PS3 will always try to use.

What else can I do to improve connection stability
- Turn off/disable other network devices. You don't need your Significant Other downloading torrents or streaming video while you're playing.
- Upgrade your router firmware. Can assist with resolving router specific bugs.
- Power cycle the router immediately before playing online.

Cool, any chance these can be started any earlier? While I suck at the best of times, being tired and possibly a little affected by alcohol doesn't help

Unfortunately this is about as early as I can start and there's a number of people that aren't available before this time either.

I'm always completely smashed when I play too, ALLPAWS. It makes coping with losing easier.

Also, if anyone here is wanting to jump on and hasn't played for a while- there are updates to download. Possibly multiple gigs + install time. So get on it.

Smashed? Great make me feel even better I only would have had a couple of beers, half a bottle of wine at most.
I'm guessing there was a reason for the late start, if I was still young that would have suited me too.

OK so to try and avoid last week's connectivity issues Lachy294 is hosting this week as he has a much higher download/upload. We'll be running the WRX wagon again this week.

So if you want to race send PSN friend request to Lachy294

The first lobby will be run as a Mesh network type (non-fixed host) which provides the smoothest online play once connected.

If there are still issues then a Star network type (fixed host) room will be run. Much less complexity with this setup but host needs high upload / low ping for smooth online results.

A new GT6 update (~600MB) + install time
and PS3 firmware update (~120MB) + install time...

...was released yesterday. You obviously need to download and install this well before 8:30pm

The new update includes community features. Still figuring out 100% how it all works but I
ve created a club for managing future races.

Club Name: Antilag
Club ID: 1000650

You can manage some of your profile and community features via the GT6 web page:
