has anyone tried 20w50 as specified in the subaru owners manual for severe driving (eg long periods on boost in hot conditions, towing trailer)

the 10 means the oil tickness at start up an the w70 is to do with the the thickness at opperating temp

at start up uou want a relatively thin oil but then when the car is runninng you want it to be bit thicker

penrite do a 10w40 but there more expensive synthetic oils are a lot better and thts why ya pay bout 80dollar for 5 litres

70w is quite high. that's a huge viscosity once it gets up to temperature.

I like to stick to the european oils personally. Silkolene is my preference, semi synthetic 10w40. Expensive but when you dump it at 5000kms it still has colour in it.

The Shell oils have come a hell of a long way in the last 5 years though, they used to be cheap shit.

Just to clarify a few wrong points in this thread:

The 'W' stands for Winter and it relates to the first number in a multigrade oil. (Also it doesn't mean 'weight' as in Fast and the Furious movies)

i.e. 10W-40 means a it is as viscous as a SAE 10 grade at lower temps (i.e. Winter) and is a SAE 40 grade at operating temperature (100 degrees).

A 5W can be pumped around your engine at a lower temperature than a 10W, a 0W at a lower temperature than a 5W.

The higher the number, the higher the viscosity. So putting in a 70 grade is like having thick honey in your engine compared to a 40 grade.

If unsure stick to your manufacturer / tuners recommendations.

yea but wen its cold you need a thinner oil such as a 5 or a 10 but then wouldnt the higher the number be better because its thicker and lubricates more at running temp??
