Before BP 98 RON Fuel came out 95 octane was called Premium.

Subaru upped their compression ratio on the WRX (9.0:1) I suspect when AVCS was introduced on the MY03. This would be when 98 RON only fuel was to be used.

So if Subaru specifically states 98 RON fuel is to be used, then this guy is still a dick.

I dont know if the new models are different but im pretty sure Subaru specify 95 RON as a minimum, for the 07 at least. I have it on a spec sheet in front of me from when I bought my car. It is also stated 95 on the brochure. I think people use 98 for performance/fuel economy/cleaner etc but 95 isnt necessarily BAD for the car by any means. Personally I use 98 because I paid all that money for the car i wanna use the best fuel i can to get the best performance and take the best care of the engine. I'm also sure it says 95 in the owners manual. Handy little book that one.

I dont think a 60 yr old guy putting 95RON in his wrx is going to have damaged it. Unless he's driving around doing 30km/h in 5th gear every day. People act like the engine will fall out or something.

Thats just my opinion anyway

if you want a car checked you can always take it to any of the good mechs mentioned on the forums and give them an hours labor, or so, to check everything.

i know the dudes at Racetorque are very good. They helped me miss two duds before i found my toy.

Chris I think the minumum octane for the fuel changed in the 06-07 WRX/STI when Subaru lowered the compression ratio again. I'm not sure. You cannot group all the models together.

Complete this fuel chart:

99-00 STI 95 RON Minimum
94-02 WRX 95 RON
03-05 WRX 98 RON
02-05 STI ???
06-07 WRX/STI ???

Also correct any errors along the way by looking at the back of your manual not relying on hearsay.

If you put anything less than 98RON fuel in ANY year STI you should be dragged into the street and shot.
