Co-Driver killed in WRC Wales...

Hey All,

Just read on Subaru's site that Markko Martin's co-driver, Michael Park, has been killed in the Wales Round of the WRC after Martin crashed his Puegeot.

The Rally was cancelled out of a mark of respect to Michael.

Just puts the sport into perspective. Yes it's a dangerous sport, but tragedies like this are still hard to take.

I am shocked.

All the best to his family and the team. Terrible when it does happen.

Just act as a reminder to all out there, keep the car calm or put it out on the track where run-off is allowed. None of us have the skill of WRC drivers either.

does anyone know what happened?

Very unusual these days. Imagine how Marko must feel. :icon_neut

Two stages into the final day when accident happend, slid off the road into a tree right into the passenger side door of the car, Marko Martin walked away. The rest of the day was cancelled. No Champagne finish or post event interviews. Marcus Gronholm was withdrawn from third place a sign of respect, Sebastian loeb took the time penalty so he didn't win the championship at this rally.....

Very similar thing which happend to possum bourne when he lost his codriver Roger Freeth at rally aust back when he was driving for SWRT in the Asia Pacific Championship.....

Goes to show that even with all there safety theres still danger in getting killed...... but its the first death in 12 years for the WRC... pretty good record when you think back at some of the accidents...

do they have more protection on the driver side or it's just drivers try to avoid impact on their side instinctively? study do show that passenger seat directly behind the driver is the safest place to be in a car..............

its pretty impressive that a tree can still get through a wrc spec cage. As you said ben, i think its the drivers natural instinct to keep himself away from the crash.
