Fuel problems on the track

Hey All,

The IWRXOC has a track day coming up at Barbagallo which I'm keen on going to. Thing is, when I got my car tuned at RaceTorque they told me now that the car has been tuned to be careful of fuel surge (I think that's what it was). They said to make sure the car has no less than half a tank of fuel at all times on the track. I do have a upgraded fuel pump installed. Does anyone know anything about this?? I may need to take up a jerry can of gas as from past experience the track day chews the fuel.

Cheers
Zombee:)

its because as you go around the track and the fuel i pushed to one side it wont get to the pump if the tank isnt full enough...

Pick up is on the right side and with all the LONG right handers the fuel all goes over the hump to the left.

Like they said keep over half a tank in it and you won't have any dramas.

Factor on the 20 odd km drive from the last bp on wannaroo rd and about a liter a lap for some idea how many jerries to take.

any easy solutions for this ?

STi in-tank surge box, which fits around the pick-up is an option.

Best option is the stock pump feeding an external 2 litre surge tank, with a Bosch motorsport external pump.

Cheap option is to keep the tank full :)

What Joe said :D

I have never had a problem with fuel surge and have done a few events, have run Barbagallo on almost empty. But yeh take a few 20L jerry cans as your lucky to get 70km's out of a tank at Barbagallo.

in tank fuel foam is also an option, stops a lot of the slosh too

Ditto....Ive run car to 'fuel light' in Wanners, Collie no surging...and using original fuel pump.

Edit: change the fuel tank to the Spec-C 50L to eliminate any trace of surging :)

Surging, as said previously on this thread, is due to the pickup being on the RHS of the tank, so on long right handers with fuel being thrown to the left, the return from LHS to RHS of the tank can't cope and you will get surge from anything like just under 1/2 to just under 1/4. (Impreza fuel tanks have a kind of kidney shaped profile). Surge has nothing to do with tune, tank or fuel pump...it's all in the pickup. The classic place for surge at Barbagallo is exiting Kolb which is a long sweeping right hander which is exited at full throttle in 3rd gear. You may be able to run the tank to 1/4 and below in a standard tank on many different circuits, but Kolb is THE classic surge place. It all depends on the cornering G forces you generate....more G's, more chance of surge.
An STi or MRT (much cheaper) in-tank surge pot is the cheapest solution. I have the MRT one in my MY06 STi and can run well under 1/4 at most places (Collie, AHG etc) without problems.....at Barbagallo it will exit out of Kolb OK at about 1/4 but not too much less.
My MRT surge pot did, however, need some subtle mods and I understand that MMS have fed these back to MRT who have now slightly changed the design to incorporate these changes.
I ran back to back tests of the MRT vs STi vs no surge pot at AHG a few years ago in my MY02 STi and both surge pots performed equally well and were able to run much lower fuel levels than the standard (no pot) tank.

So there you have it....

I went with the STI fuel surge thingy. It has a nice sti sticker on it......oh i digress.

Your options are buy it (all the same part numbers) from

1) MRT in the east for $1990 + freight + CC surcharge + insurance
2) Secondhand one for around $800 (rampant has one for sale at the moment. Find him in the vendors section.
3) Buy a brand new genuine one from japanparts.com landed to your door with all the crap fees etc for under $700. You do the maths.

They are a great bit of kit and the last thing you want is to lean your engine out at full noise and melt a piston because it has no fuel.
