the turbo could have been on the way out and the seller didnt know... it could have been working fine before it was taken off the car... I dont think that most ppl deliberatly go out of their way to wrong someone...

So it's not possible/easy to repair the seals, and put the turbo back in? Or now that you have a bad taste in your mouth .. Buy a new one and cop it on the chin if the seller won't repair?

Expensive operation .. If the seller won't have it back, either way you've gotta pull the turbo off again, so try and repair it .. If not, buy a new one.

with ball-bearing turbo's, you need to replace the whole shaft, so it is not so easy as just taking it apart and putting it back together again...

Last I heard, a rebuild kit would cost around $1700... which makes it quite un-economical to fix!

In actual fact, most ball bearing turbos cannot even be 'opened' up etc and instead the cost will be associated with replacing the whole cartridge (bit in between the 2 snails). Those that can be opened and re-sealed will still require the shaft/ impellers to be balanced. As many ball bearing shafts are actually tapered and not straight from point A- point B, this is almost impossible on the regular machines and requires an air balancing device. Not sure that anyone in Perth has one of these!?

Even a non-ball bearing re-seal on the newer turbos won't see much out of 1K these days...
