Stronger casing and stronger gearset. Once you've seen both gearsets side by side, you'll see why. First gear in the 6MT is more than twice as thick than the 5MT. the gears themselves are much larger and stronger.

Plus, when was the last time youve heard of a 6 speed breaking in a road car? Doug managed to seize a selector ring on his 6 speed, but thats in his rally car and he was shifting very fast. Only other breakages of 6 speed ive heard of are in race cars and a few in the road cars in the US running massive power (700+ HP)

Who brings the six speeds in? Best place to get obe? Will the 5 speed clutch still work or totally different?

5-speed clutch is smaller diameter im pretty sure..

And a 6-speed with a short shift kit ($150) works very well, split second shifts are no worries at all

If you want to set a time, your better of with the 5 speed dude.

End of the day, speak to the guys you have trusted to build your car so far for the best advice man.

We can argue the rest here on your behalf.

You can get a brand new PPG gearset with selector hubs, syncros etc for around $7K-$7.5 so why would bother paying 5K for a secondhand one that's done various Duttons, MC's and track days.
All the work was done at RMS on that gearbox but lets just say that car has had a fairly spirited driving career in the hands of Chris, Alex, Geoff Watts and Leigh....

Cheers
Ken

i have a 99 forester gearbox casing (8 bolt) (i blew 2nd gear & replaced it with a ra dccd box) you can have for $100 if you want to get a box built whilst your old one is still in the car
