Can you put premim (96RON) in an 05 STI?

I'm heading down south today for a week and am a bit worried some of the smaller towns might not have any 98RON as I’m going via Pemby probably to see some friends.

Will I fark up my STI if I put 96RON (premium) into it? The manual recommends 98 but says 96 is ok at the sacrifice of some power. Oh yeah it's stock tune.

Hey Albany people I might see you round Sat doing some Yorkies heh heh.

Cheers.

BOMB3R 21-08-2008 01:41 PM

Get some octane boost if you really have too put 95 in. hahaha just read the whole thing. You will be able to find 98 ron in lots of places between here and Pemberton.

Mister Two 21-08-2008 01:41 PM

buy and stow away a few bottles of octane booster and chuck it in when you find you are stuck using 96 or lower octane fuel

i think you answered your own question...
jsut dont give it too much stick when on 96ron... simple

dan.r.s 21-08-2008 01:49 PM

whats wrong with vortex 95? i know alot of people who use it, but then i have been told "theories" that it makes engines go ka-boom..

Vortex is 98.

http://www.caltex.com.au/products_oil_listing.asp?section=1

vortex is both actually

gorotsuki69 21-08-2008 01:59 PM

do a search on fuelwatch it lists all places with 98ron

pmh 21-08-2008 02:00 PM

you can get both

you'll struggle to find vortex 98 in "rural" areas
there's BP between here and albany

worst case, run 95, just don't boost it
but as an insurance, just run octane booster

Vortex 98 ( The red pump nozzle ) is 98.

Vortex is only 95. Don't know what colour it is but they are colour coded.

gorotsuki69 21-08-2008 02:11 PM

make sure you get to a petrol station before 5pm as many of the country ones shut early.

Fair enough, used Caltex twice since owning the car. I assumed it was only 98 like Ultimate is only 98.

Assumption is the Mother of all fuckups I know :D

Strubaru 21-08-2008 02:40 PM

you can also get your car specifically tuned to run on 95 or 98

MKVIGTI 21-08-2008 02:43 PM

Have been using the Vortex 98 a lot the last 6 months cos the local is usually 10 cents cheeper than the local BP.

Car doesn't seem to make any difference either way.

Had to put 95 in at border village a couple of days ago. Octane booster and not really booting it and doesn't make any noticeable difference. Wouldn't like to have to do it regularly though.

phizzle 21-08-2008 02:53 PM

Ever seen the inside of an engine after running Octane Booster? Yikes

saturation 21-08-2008 03:07 PM

evhoe ran better on vortex98 havent bothered trying yet with the STi as the local is all same price now.. sheesh

I live in Albany and also have an 05 STi. There is one BP in town and 2 on the way down Albany hwy at Williams and Mt Barker.

Otherwise the local caltex has Vortex 98 which should be fine on stock tune.

Let me know if you want to go for a cruise ;)

jEstEr? 21-08-2008 07:27 PM

almost every town south west has a BP with U98, look on the BP website there is a journey planner that shows petrol stations and their available fuels

+1 was just searching the BP website trying to find it when i read your post! :D

It works well, and you'll be more than right driving down that way. Been that way numerous times, never had a problem finding fuel. Just don't wait till your empty. Even if you fill up at half a tank...

You wont see me.....Ill be in Perth. Would have been up for a cruise if I was in Albany.

Best way is to use a knock amp and listen to how bad it rattles.

I won't use Caltex Vortex 98 at all based on that reason, everytime I've had it in the car it rattles like all buggery! (when i boot it)

However this is the internet and everyone has their own opinions :)

BP 98 - works, why change formula when it works.

My last tune was done on Vortex 98 anyway. Guess I just have more of a safety margin on BP when I do run it.

Solid diet of BP for the next month anyway. No Vortex 98 in SA or Tassie yet.

Yea Phizzle haven't seen inside but have heard it isn't pretty. A tank or two here or there is cool if you have to but regular use pretty seriously fouls things up from what I have heard.

OlisSTI 22-08-2008 11:09 AM

Yeah but BP shut at like 5pm only Caltex stay open.

Just for fun I tried some 96RON. Yuck. Idles bad, no power at all and eats through fuel like nothing (got about 400ish km on a tank at constant 120km/h). I passed 3-4 towns on the way down from perth and only saw closed servos after dark and the caltex I stopped at to refuel had standard vortex and unleaded only.

In Denmark now, they have 98 RON gonna dry out this tank and put the good stuff back in. Never putting this shit in again unless it's really required.

^^^ What he said. It tinges everything orange/brown, looks alot like the color of rust. There's a pic I've seen where someone had 2 turbos next to each other showing the size of the wastegates. One of them looks like it had some octane booster running through it for some time! I'll see if I can dig it up

EDIT:

OlisSTI 22-08-2008 04:13 PM

whoah why would octane booster do that? Can't be healthy!

mattmy99 22-08-2008 04:22 PM

U98 and Vortex 98 both come from the same tank at CSBP in Kwinana. Exactly the same fuel, no additives or anything. Stories of cars running differently on U98 and vortex98 are BS. It's exactly the same fuel, delivered by a different truck.

waxdass 22-08-2008 04:55 PM

no their not actually.

BP98 IS different than vortex.

Kato 22-08-2008 04:59 PM

Except is it not the same fuel from the same tank. BP provides fuel to make the Vortex 98, but it is not the same formula.

mattmy99 22-08-2008 05:14 PM

Each to their own I guess. I've worked extensively in the CSBP yard (surveyor), and live with a bloke who drives for Mitchels. Everyone I've talked to has suggested that both mitchells U98 trucks and caltex 98RON trucks fill up at the same stand and deliver the exact same product.

That's just me, afterall, this is the interweb, and people are guaranteed to have their own opinion.

Yeah I thought it was the same for a while, but knowing the engineers who work on it they have told me it is a different process for each fuel.

bullet 22-08-2008 06:41 PM

read your manual mine says 95 or 98 inside the tank cover it says 98
vortex 95 & 98 i have been told is the same fuel just different octane.
my car runs on both no difference
