How have you guys physically paid for the vehicle? Do you get on a plane and collect it personally, or do some of the transport companies work as an escrow agent?

Edit: I got a plane to Adelaide to inspect it. Wanted to make sure
that their idea of "good condition" was the same as mine.
Signed the paperwork (was from a dealer) and flew back. Was
only in Adelaide for 4 hours.

Payment = Bank cheque. This way it is 100% traceable if they run off with
your money. If you have done REVS check and have the license
papers and cross referenced it with some for of ID (their drivers
license) then there is very little they can get away with.

If in doubt, take a camera and get them to pose with the cheque
you give them. If they run off then the pic makes a great "wanted"
poster.

I guess you can fly there, pay for it, then take it then and there
and drive it yourself to the local trucking company ready for
shipment.

I bought my car off ebay from NSW nearly 3 years ago now. I spoke to the guy over the phone before I committed to buying it. I had intentions of doing a conversion on it from the get go so didnt care what the running gear was like. The photos looked good so I took a risk. The guy I bought it from was upfront and told me there was money owing on it. I paid $6000 for my car and it had $6500 owing, so I agreed if he paid the $500 that I would pay the $6000 direct to the bank that held the loan. I wouldnt recommend doing it this way as I was lucky.

Had my last car trucked over from Sydney when I moved with NSW rego plates etc still attached to the car. Rule of thumb is you are suppose to change rego over to WA within 12months. I drove around without a problem before i got my arse into gear and went over the pits to get WA rego only because my NSW rego was about to run out. Stopped at booze buses, cops driving next to me etc... no drama.

FYI - if you want to save yourself the hassle of going over to inspect / collect the vehicle, the below offers a secure payment service, as well as a vehicle inspection & transport

Shipping with CEVA from Adelaide to Perth (in a sealed shipping container) on the train was $990 Easter before last. (Only $330 Perth to Adelaide).

I've bought 3 cars from over East all without seeing them. All were inspected by a mechanic and I also spoke to the dealerships where they were serviced. Also all 3 were still under warranty. Had shipped over by Autotrans and also had Autotrans hand over the bank cheque on pickup. Pretty straightforward and I'd probably always buy cars this way, until prices in WA drop to over East prices. The only issue I had, was legal tint % in NSW isn't the same as WA, so the car I bought with factory tint actually failed when it went over the pits. Personally I wouldn't buy one over East if it was out of warranty, I had to fly over and had to drive it back.

so if you were to send it over on a truck, does the car have to be sill registered in Vic so you can drive it to the Pits?

I'm also thinking of buying a private 2nd hand car over there and not sure how i go about doing it... Does it stay in the previous owners name until it gets taken over the pits and re registered in your name over here?
