Question about doing a ground up build
Hi all,
Was just wondering if it is at all legal to say buy a Non Aus GD shell from an importer such as JWS and then build a car from imported parts for road use and would i be able to register it with "A "class registration? If yes what kind of hoops would i have to jump through to get it registered? Also is it possible to get a complete shell not half cuts into aus that are not bought in for race/rally? Cheers, Wayne |
as far as I know the VIN is recorded as a rally/race import and marked never to be fully licensed.
So short answer unfortunately might be no. I am sure people who know a whole heap more than me can add detail. I am not entirely clued up on it, but I have heard that you can rebuild a damaged ADM car using a JDM shell as a replacement part. ie buy a smashed car at auction and rebuild it using Jap shell. Quite a few hurdles to jump through to do this so I believe and I too would be interested in finding all the legalities to this.

Buy a B Rego car and swap the firewall (or compliance plate part at least) with the one from an AUS spec car.
Legal: Shit no. |

Well that's the easiest and cheapest way :p You would need to crash test at least 100 same/identical cars to have the car ADR approved. You would also need a company name etc etc etc. Even if it is the same exact shell (which it is) because it is stamped in the USA or Japan for their standards not Australia's it means it can't be legally road registered. Well that's my understanding of it anyway. |
Can't register anything other than a Aus sold car unless it is a personal import brought in. (i.e. owned for a year overseas and then brought in).
This is because Subaru Aus brought them in and is basically to protect them from the grey import market. |
Cheers thought so.
Just thought id put it out there as a possible alternative to other means of importing a specific model, by importing the shell and then putting it back together once it was here. There are a few other ways which i will have to pursuit, The mission will continue until it's complete no matter how long it takes! :D |
I found this swap/rebuild interesting, a possible option.

[/QUOTE] Pretty much spot on. And as kato said unless the car was imported by subaru themselves forget it. Having said that there are plenty of cars running around with a different firewall..... Easiest way would be to buy a gx etc and then strip it and soda blast it and then build away from there. Brendon |
