LED Brake / Tail light conversion?

Has anyone ever done an LED stop/tail conversion to factory tail lights?

I don't mean using those spastic LED converted standard globe bases, but someting more along the lines of using LED strips like these:

They have 2 step brightness and are out of an 09 Cayenne. LED's are red (and bright!)
All circuitry is on the boards, so they run direct off 12 volts and are three wire driven : low, high & earth, just like a standard stop tail globe.

I have a set of stock GC8 tail lamps to try them in first.......What do you reckon, have a crack at it?

yeah why not!

SKYHIONPSI 16-03-2009 02:53 PM

do it.

Kym, do you reckon Red LEDs through a red lens will be ok?

I'll need to cut the original globe holder mounting out of the back of the lamp assembly to allow access to mount the boards against the reflector.....I'll do it to one of my old stockie lamps first before I slice and dice the STI lamps.

wow, i cant see anything from an 09 Cayenne being exactly cheap!

but if you have them, then give it a shot!

Yeah, they're out of a set of lamps replaced under warranty for failed globe holders for the indicator globes....... A bonus for working in parts!

Can a mod please move this to the general subaru discussion section....... Don't know how I posted it here under news and events????

ImPreSiV 16-03-2009 03:02 PM

moved :)

should look fine thru red Ross.

Cheers Kym!

I'll give it a crack ...anyone have a DREMMEL?

the only other way to cut the globe mount would be hot knifing it = messy!

ImPreSiV 16-03-2009 03:06 PM

drill multiple holes, then join holes with sharp stanley....

DEDLYWEPN 16-03-2009 03:06 PM

Forgive my ignorance, but wont it look just like a stock globe when lit only brighter?

Nonetheless... interested to see!! :p
