Not everything that Bosch makes is good

So I decided to replace my stuffed rear pads with some "OEM" specification pads....Bosch make an OEM replacement pad, so I thought I'd give it a shot...couldn't hurt, right?

BIG mistake. Take a look at the below picture and keep in mind, these pads were professionally installed and have done less than 200 kilometres on freshly machined rotors.

What you can see is a rotor that has been gouged out way beyond use. I can't have them machined again, to machine off that much material will make them below minimum thickness....so basically, the Bosch pads have fucked the rotors in less than 200km.

Note to self - DO NOT buy those pads ever again.

SPEC IV 28-03-2009 02:39 PM

What was the model number for the pads??

That looks pretty bad mate!!

BALISTC 28-03-2009 03:00 PM

Db1342qs

SweLLy 28-03-2009 03:05 PM

holy crap...

is there some warrenty or anything to cover that?

DEDLYWEPN 28-03-2009 03:40 PM

Warranty for sure!? Thats fkn bs, have you been in touch with Bosch?

BALISTC 28-03-2009 03:48 PM

I will be.

Got these pads about 12 months ago, have no receipt that I can find or the box...but I've only just gotten around to installing them now.

The pads are marked with brand and part number, so it shouldn't be too hard...and seeing as I bought it through my business, Coventrys should have it on record too.

Adz 28-03-2009 03:53 PM

China Discs.

BALISTC 28-03-2009 03:54 PM

Yeah because OEM Subaru rotors are made in China, of course.

SweLLy 28-03-2009 04:12 PM

china, i lol'd

good old coventry's what don't they have :D

RichX 28-03-2009 04:17 PM

Didn't even know Bosch made pads .. guess they can't be good at everything.

Any good (knowledgable) staff anymore...........

(we all left)

Balistic: Are they a 1st gen metal pad by any chance?

deviant 28-03-2009 06:19 PM

I bet you a shiny penny that Bosch turn around and say they can not accept responsibility for the damage because they do not know how the car was driven or that there is evidence of vehicle abuse.

Put it down to experience and use it as an excuse for some higher spec discs.

haha knowledge (everythings written in a book for you)

there are a few tools at the welshpool branch

i just ask for people that have half an idea and know what im talking about ;)

Um No mate not really.....

Mate, you have no idea what it takes to be a good parts interpreter. Finding a part number on a PC is only 20% of what I do.

Over the phone diagnostics, analyzing smash jobs for quotation, pretty much understanding every system and they're interaction (engine, trans, ecu, body, suspension, electronics, trim, brakes etc) in any specific vehicle.

Damn you got me started! //end rant.

Cov's lost a lot of people when they changed over to orical for the inventory system, poor change over, minimal training etc. People with 20+ years just walk out the door.

Rossco 28-03-2009 07:29 PM

Balistic: That disk looks to me (maybe just the way the photo looks?) like the pads haven't even bedded in yet. You can see some transfer of pad material to the disc surface, which is normal during the bed in. At least they're not glazed glass smooth!

The disc certainly isn't scored beyond use. That disc shows a partial bed in on re-machined discs.

Unless the person who skimmed the discs did a shit job (left them ridged trying to rush the job) I'd look at them again in another 500km to see if the surface has become more uniform. throw-away level ridging is 3+ mm usually.

That's a rear disc right? 500km to fully bed in rears, 250 for fronts.

They're the Quick Stop metallic pads so they're bound be a little agressive to the disc.

saturation 28-03-2009 07:32 PM

that doesnt look like little aggressive though...

good timing on the post as im in the process of deciding a new set of rotors and pads for myself so thanks for the heads up and hope you make some progress with bosch somehow :)

Rossco 28-03-2009 08:04 PM

Fobz and I are both running EBC green pads and RDA slotted front disc's in our STI's , very happy with them.

ahha got you rev'd up, nah i know how it is was just pulling your leg.

Mind you they deal with a heap of different stuff which impresses me when they actually know what there talking about. Its not just parts they deal with its the whole thing
:P

It's all good!!

I did 9 years with Cov's, the last 3 were up in Kalgoorlie doing mining contract work.....I finished in 2001 with them.

I think I've done every make over the last 16/17 years: except Ferrari, skoda & audi!!

SweLLy 28-03-2009 08:14 PM

9years wow, you must be like 100!

haha nah did they buy you anything big when you left them?

im assuming your still working in the automotive industry?

Rossco 28-03-2009 08:25 PM

Not likely, I quit on the spot after they refused to transfer me back to Perth from Kal.
(Ended up managing a Pub/club in Kal for 2 years!)

Yeah still in the game, at Giants in osb park now (just transferred from Chellingworth, where I was parts 2ic).

nick6013 28-03-2009 09:32 PM

intials R .C ? by any chance

dtrally 29-03-2009 01:31 AM

I wouldn't immediately blame the pads for that without some more investigation.
Did you inspect the machined finish when the pads were first installed? Were they machined on or off car? Have inner and outer surfaces on both sides resulted in the same deep scoring? It almost looks like the pad was fitted back to front. (don't laugh, I've seen it more than once)

Rossco 29-03-2009 04:55 AM
