Video camera in car

Was looking into a video camera to bolt to the roll cage and had a look at the CAMS manual that states for events (competition) any camera over 100g must be attached to the floor, sprint events it doesn't mention anything. Does this mean for club (IWRXOC) events, No limits etc bolting a camera to the cage is OK but for Dutton, Targa etc you should be using a bullet camera (less than 100g) ?

Ive used a suction mount on the glass for all AHG, no limits nights and dutton without issue. Camera is a HD mini DV unit, i.e. normal hand held. May be an issue on timed competition events, but i've never had a problem thus far.

Cheers JME, I can buy a nice HD camcorder for $600 which has a very nice image or a bullet cam VIO POV1.5 not as nice a image but smaller with the bullet cam.

Stick to CAMS approved gear - they are getting tougher with scruitineering nowadays - suction mount won't cut it (although I have gotten away with it previously). I'd go with a bullet cam mounted to your cage.

If you are going for a camcorder, go with a SD card version as HDD's don't like vibration & G-forces.

HDD's is a big no-no as Fred pointed out. The SD technology is great nowadays, and the quality isnt bad at all considering what you're recording. If its true timed competition, you may find some resistance to the setup I use these days.

Sony do an awesome HD bullet cam now but at 5k  I think I will wait till the prices come down a bit.

There are quite a few systems out there that record straight to sd cards. Ask around some of the rally guys etc but there is heaps of stuff out there.

let me know how you get on because I have not done enough research on the matter but would like to hook something up for targa this year.

Try a search on the intra nets for the "Elmo Camera" we used one in the rally car and they are great...
