Lets not forget Roland Ratzenburger who also lost his life that weekend.

That whole event should have been canned from the start. The weekend had already seen some horrendous accidents before poor Roland died.

Fri -Rubens Barrichello got airborne over a kerb, smashed a wall and rolled several times. Got knocked out, swallowed his tounge. Quick actions by the doctors saved his life.
Sat - Rolands accident
Race start, two cars collide, debris injures several fans, a couple seriously.
Sennas crash
Near end of the race, a wheel falls off a car in the pits, hitting a pit crew member - seriously injured.

One of the darkest darkest weekends in the history of the sport.

RIP Roland and Senna.

rip both, its good to see the FIA take the hardline with safety though.

Atleast they have learnt from their lessons, even though they were very high prices to pay for it!

The Candy Toleman still does it for me. The car he should have won Monaco 84 in.

westoz 05-05-2009 02:58 AM

Damn, was it THAT long ago? Remember it like yesterday, not exactly the best weekend in the history of F1... and one of the most memorable for the wrong reasons. Sheesh, I gotta stop trippin around the sun! :(

If you haven't seen it, check out the BBC Documentary called "Grand Prix: The Killer Years".

[QUOTE]In the 60s and early 70s it was common for Grand Prix drivers to be killed while racing, often televised for millions to see. Mechanical failure, lethal track design, fire and incompetence snuffed out dozens of young drivers. They had become almost expendable as eager young wannabes queued up at the top teams' gates waiting to take their place.

This is the story of when Grand Prix was out of control.

Just goes to show how far F1 safety (and motor racing in general) has come.

This and one on the old rally days.
watched both on recent trips on Qantas over the last couple of months.

Very interesting stuff. Crazy rally spectators!!

Cheers,

Joe.

That's the docco I was referring to when we spoke at RAC, Rusty. Brutal spot back then in regards to safety. Disgusting really. Look how far we've come with safety. And it's a good thing too with Grosjean about!!
