Default Gen 4 vs Gen 5 Liberty - side by side photo comparison

Hey guys, originally posted this on RSLC but thought P-WRX might be interested given we have quite a few gen 4 Liberty owners here!

I found a dealer with this excellent comparison between a white Gen 4 Liberty by STI wagon and a white Gen 5 Liberty GT wagon.

How did Subaru go so wrong?

Hello rear leg room in Gen 5!

What was wrong with the Gen 4 interior? Apparently the controls for the climate control are awful to use on the Gen 5 as well!

Ummm, what happened to the huge sunroof??

You have no idea how many we sell & how much of a wait there is for them......
In saying that, the push button hand brake on the dash is SHIT!!!! & I personally prefer the gen 4.

The MY10 wagon is imo not completely hideous but the sedan is just well...a Camry for looks. It will however be a winner for subaru in terms of sales. In the looks dept its a sacrifice but will be salvaged by a swag of aftermarket parts. Lets face it, drop it, bigger rims, and some bodykit work and you will see a vastly improved Camry still.

Can't wait to get mine.....3 weeks and counting......MY10 Gen V Liberty GT Premium Graphite Grey Wagon.

The MY10 has grown on me, wasn't a big fan when I first saw pics but it does look better in the flesh........Wagon FTW though.

I believe alot of people may change their tune once a Tuned by
version comes out, I'm certainly waiting for it with anticipation.

As quoted from RSLC, lol:

"aww it makes so much sense now how they styled the gen5 ... someone discovered the "warp" feature on photo shop"

The old car had such classic clean lines and looked great in even its most basic non turbo specification. I absolutely loved the frameless doors and the glass house effect of all Subaru Liberty wagons right up until this model. Why couldn't they just evolve it more! Why do new models these days have to be so garish and over the top!

Where has the attention to detail gone as well? For example, the gen 4 had beautiful moulded oval exhaust tips whereas the new gen 5 tips look small, poky and tacked on with an exposed screw and may as well be from a Kia.

The gen 4 interior had beautiful soft feel materials which gave the car a real touch of class, the new interior is cheap and hard.

Not only that, but Subaru have cut costs and the 6 speed in the new Liberty's is now just a modified version of the old 5 speed with an extended transfer case for the 6th gear and uses a cable driven shifter system rather than proper metal linkages.

Unfortunately, this is what happens as Subaru tries to move the Liberty more and more into the bland "mainstream" and in general as manufacturers try and cater more and more to the American market (Sorry Dave!).

I think we can wave goodbye to the Liberty GT being a true performance car like its predecessors... in the days of crash safety, emissions, fuel economy and push button handbrakes, performance just isn't important to Subaru anymore for this model!

I much prefer the blacked out D pillar in the gen 4 than the painted thing in the 5. I think that they look alright but have not had a chance to have a look at things like the interior etc.

Other than the smiley headlights, I think its a much better / modern feeling vehicle than the gen 4.
