The Storm took my WRX... Engine rebuilds?

1 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,

Unfortunately the Storm took my WRX away from me (Flooding of the Engine)

My insurance company advised it's going to be a write-off, so now I'm stuck in a hard place. Apparently to bring it back to life would require a new / recond engine.

So here are my questions;

If i choose to buy it back from Insurance could I source a new Engine here (in Perth) and what would it cost to transplant / get back on the road again? (It's a 1999 WRX)

Secondly, What repercussions from flooding if any would occur in the future? IE wires rusting over time etc?

Thirdly, would dropping in a STI engine be possible as opposed to the equivalent one I have now?

Bear in mind this is all dependant on how much the buy back cost will be (I havn't been told yet)

Obviously if it's too costly (over 8 - 9k inc buy back of car) then its probably not worth it..

Cheers for the assistance,
Matt

P.S. I can tell this is going to turn into a heated debate :)

I wasn't just asking where to buy an engine from - I'm asking a little more that that.

if there was any water in the interior i would just write it off unless you plan to strip the interior for a track car or something.

Looks like a large shirtless guy is standing in front of your can holding his man cans. If thats the case, write it off....

just another option.. (engine-wise)
buy one from the eastern states..

call these guys

they usually have used, reconditioned and new engines...price ranges around $3000, and around $400 shipping...

mate, i would take the insurance money & buy another wrx

by the look of it your ecu (which is in the passenger footwell under the carpet) would have been totally/partially submerged, not sure what the implications would be in regards to it being fried, i personally would just let it go

Hmm.. I thought as much ...

I've had it quickly diagnosed - The ECU is totally fried. See comments for Autoguy.

Checked Engine, Found water in cylinders, dried out, still no start, found no spark or diagnostic codes. Check ECU unit, All wet. Tested compressions (125, 75, 70 and 100PSI) - Low compressions. suspect bent conrods.

Looks like the WRX is going to the sky now. :(

blurex 30-03-2010 02:03 PM

Bent conrod?..if the engine was not running (or even hot) at the time, why would the conrods be bent, or fail?..

Strubaru 30-03-2010 02:20 PM

cranking the engine over with water in the cylinders would cause this... water don't compress like air ;)

i'd imagine you'd be forever chasing electrical gremlins with the amount of wiring/sensors/relays etc which may have damage from trying to start it with a fried ecu :(
