High KM's - Is it a huge issue when buying second hand?
Hi guys, hope all is going well for everybody, havnt posted up for a while (So busy with uni )
I had a quick question, ive been looking at a My00 Impreza RX. My question is, it has 193,000km on the engine. The car has its full logbook history with services at Subaru Dealers every 5000km, is it likely that if I was to trade in my current car for this one, that its going to die anytime in the next couple of years? My reasoning for an RX over a WRX (at the moment) is that I dont have a huge amount to spend on the car, and I plan to buy a brand new STI in 2011 or 2012 once I am settled into a full-time job rather than being a poor uni student. I just always wanted the Gen1 Impreza so i figured this might be a good comprimise. My thoughts were also that since it wasnt a modded WRX, it is less likely to have been thrashed or worn out. Is there anything specific I should be aware of? I have inspected the car, there is only some paint damage, no leaks buckles whines etc. The dealer is asking 9k for it (which im sure is way overpriced). Was going to offer my 4k Car on trade in and give another 3k in cash. Thanks Cam. |

Non turbo's will live forever if serviced right and not thrashed.
Just get it inspected before you buy - 150 dollars now might save you 3000 later.

Have a thorough inspection completed or some form of warranty.
200,000 km isn't a problem if serviced correctly. 300,000 will be close to a new motor time.

How does one go about getting it inspected. Who do i talk to, and how does it work.
Example: does somebody come out to the dealer with me and I pay them, or do I have to pay the dealer to take the car in to the shop etc. Thanks, great help so far |

Just remember at 200k the timing belt will need replacing, so either get them to do this before you buy the vehicle, or be prepared to spend another $800-$1200 on the major service once you get the car.
As for inspections, I don't think RAC do them anymore, as it was not profitable, but SGIO, or even places like Ultratune/Automasters may have an inspection service. |

Personally for an outlay of $7K I would be looking more for a lower mileage well looked after Jap car and not an almost 200,000km Impreza RX...

So your saying that even 7k is not a fair price for the impreza. What range would you suggest is more fair? I know there are lancers around with 150,000kms for 5k, but the only thing i'm interested in is the Impreza's. Perhaps Gen1 is just too old unless you have buckets of money lying around and its not a problem if its not decent value.

You can buy MY98 WRX's for ~$8k.
People are wanting crack money for the non-turbo ones though. What I think they are worth and what people are selling them for seem to be 2 different things...
