Default Beware Shoppers! - Possible Faker STi

Hi all
Been MIA for a while but thought id pop in to say Gday.

Just been looking at GC8 STi's for my brother-in-law and we went and looked at this one.

http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...d=12217B81D924

My BIL was stoked, keen as to buy the car. But something wasnt sitting right with me.
The guys story went he bought it off a uni student in Queensland, lived there then moved to Melbourne then Perth. He has had it for six years only done 77,000ks total blah blah blah.

I noticed a few things, for starters the Vin read GC3DK3G so i knew straight away something was a miss, then the date of manufacture was xx/96 not xx/99. When i google this Vin code all i get is 1996 Subaru Impreza RX.

The vehicle definately has had a lot of STi parts applied, strut brace, seats and interior, front and rear bars and wing, lights, even the map lights above the rear view mirror, motor is a 2.0l turbo but engine number was too difficult to see to determine if the engine was infact Sti engine.

Things i thought were missing were the build number after the Vin Code which i thought all STis had, STi build number badge on dash, the ride comfort and perhaps kilometres.

Am i right in thinking this car is a possible chop shop import and this guy is selling a dodgy car?
Im not here to bag the guy cos he might have been done over himself and the car is a neat example and well looked after. But at the end of the day he is trying to sell a RX as an STi and if you were in an accident youd basically get your arse handed to you by your insurance and their insurance and the 3rd party kind.
Just thought i should let people know and perhaps get a little insight myself so feel free to discuss.
Cheers and hope all is well.

Its a conversion of some sorts.. looks at the speedo only goes to 180kph. So the true kms are unknown..

Also V6 STI 4 door came out in 2000 and the rims are also different. Thats just a few things..

Type R I'm thinking it has all the Type R bits in it, and it was just a 96 RX conversion that's had a face lift. A genuine import Type R wouldn't be road reg here because it would be a B Grade Import. So I think he's just trying to flog it off as an STI "Type R" to get some extra dollars. I would offer him $11k :P and thats a stretch... Also a MY99 STI is a 2 door... this clearly is not, unless its a '99 MY00.. which is different.
