and to the OP - section 8-2 of your new car's owner manual tells you what Subaru recommend for the first 1600 km:
- keep it under 4000 RPM
- don't drive at a constant speed (fast or slow)
- avoid hard braking
WHS, plus don't use synthetic oil till after the 12500/ 6mth service.
Its a good idea to read the owners manual on any new car, thats what its there for.

^^^Why use the run in oil for 12500kms as it's generally it's a mineral oil which helps bed in the rings etc but is not too good to run for a long time or you'll cause more wear.

Well that's what I've been told by a few well know and forum used workshops and was the original reasoning for the free oil change by dealers after a few thousand kms.

It is a mineral based oil. But of very high quality, it is API SM rated, the same rating as the full synthetic genuine oil. Unlikely to cause any excessive wear, but good for bedding in. As for why they added a 5000/3mth service and then dropped it again, remember there was a few issues with the EJ25T on some cars? I would say that was the reason, I've been at Subaru for 8yrs and it was only the H6 that used to get a first service, except for that little stint a couple of years ago.

I've come across a few articles before that actually say to give it some juice (with in reason).
This one relates to motorcycles, but the process is basically the same.

BTW I'm not saying do this - I don't know shit about engines, I just found it to be an interesting read as it offers a different opinion with some information to back it up.

For those in the know, feel free to discredit it.
Good article. Sound advice.
Tried it with my CBR 600 RR and 2.5 boxer. Both done 20k plus and no probs.
Rev free and good power. I'm a convert.

I'm willing to bet my left nut that the Subaru engineers know more about these engines and how to have an oil with a run in period to enable the worldwide warranties that they have to honour, than a few workshops in Perth.

Also, all of your babied Subarus are put straight on a rolling road after being manufactured and all get revved off their tits.

Follow whatever is in your manual for your driving style. Changing the formula is where a lot of the 'issues' for cars come in.
