Straight cut gears for the 2002 subaru

Hey people i curently have a 2002 subaru wrx and the gear box wines quite a bit whilst coming of the revs whilst doing the gear box up i was thinking of puting straight cut gears for gears; 1,2,3 being on a aprentice wage im tight for cash and need to know would straight cut gears or a whole recond sti 6 speed box be better? And whats the ruffs prices for both these?
Cheers every one :)

munya 07-01-2011 08:34 PM

straight cuts will prob cost you more than a 6speed anyways have looked to go down this path and at thee moment the 6speed is cheeper my thinking anyways :)

Rossco 07-01-2011 08:34 PM

$7K for either option.

Jordiee 07-01-2011 08:36 PM

why are they as expensive as a new ej207 inc labor?
i don't understand

Disruptin 07-01-2011 08:46 PM

Wow realy that much? Is it more labour than the parts im guessing?

Mister Two 07-01-2011 08:50 PM

Can do a 6 speed swap for $5K these days.

And a 6 speed is stronger even than aftermarket straight cut gears for 5 speed.

I have some 6 speeds for sale. so if you are interested in going down this path... PM Me.

When and in what gears does it whine? It may be as simple as transfer case bearings needing to be replaced.

Wozzernux 07-01-2011 09:44 PM

If the budget for straight cuts or a 6sp conversion is beyond you, then there's the option to look for a higher ratio 5sp box like a 4.11 or 4.44 + matching rear diff.

Including a new clutch & a flywheel?
Including a new clutch & a flywheel?
Including a second hand 6 clutch and flywheel with at least 70% of life left in the clutch.

Ive noticed that of the people who break a 5 speed, many do it not long after putting in a new heavy duty 5 speed clutch. So when they do the 6 speed conversion the 5 speed HD clutch stays in.

monkeee 08-01-2011 09:11 AM

straight cuts = fully schmick rally spec noise:D

In all seriousness though, go the 6 speed, tried and tested. As above budget $5-7k for the lot.

jEstEr? 08-01-2011 01:26 PM

wait, your gearbox is whining, so you want to put straight cuts in?

whining on decel is probably your rear diff anyway

RXqME 08-01-2011 07:10 PM

If it is the g/box i would rather go the 6 speed! After a while the whining noise of the straight cuts get too you!

joey89 08-01-2011 08:06 PM

if you want quick 1/4 times go cuts

if you want street use and track work go 6 speed

RT did my old rexy for about 6.6k all up including a few other syncros and bits the box needed

Jordiee 09-01-2011 05:44 AM

just out of curiosity,

how does a 4.44 5 speed box compare to a 6 speed in performance and price?

His stock box is 4.444.

No offense to the OP, but you should probably read as much as you can on these forums before you start posting things.. your chosen mod path is seriously flawed.

1. You can only do 1-2 or 1-4, not 1-3.
2. Imagine the sound of driving in reverse all the time. Straight cuts are worse. If you are worried about a little whine on decel, this will drive you nuts.
3. As Jester said, whine on decel is most likely rear diff, not gearbox.
4. Before changing any 5 speed out, smash in some Redline Smurf Snot gearbox oil to see if it helps eliminate noises, notchyness etc.

FYI, Kaaz is 1-3 straight,4th &5th helical.

WRXRW 09-01-2011 11:54 AM

peow peow!

dtrally 09-01-2011 07:15 PM

The transfer case bearings fail regularly on those 2001 onwards 4.44 5 speeds. I would recomend you get someone who knows Subarus to inspect it and quote on rectifying the fault firstly. Full transfer case bearing repkacement would be under a grand, even less if you only change the noisy bearing.

I knew someone would post that!

I should have said PPG's since that's what most people go for...

OP... Ok, two things:

1) ^ What he said. Do this first.

2) Tino's car, (Peanut Sti), is 600 odd hp / Im not sure of the talks. Testament to the ability of the standard 6 speed.

Brent.
