Conversion options

The gearbox in my MY00 WRX has finally decided to throw in the towel. Stripped 2nd on an OEM clutch.
The motor is roughly 210 000kms old, and the turbo has leaky seals as the exhaust will occasionally spit oil when revved after idling for a while.

So here is my dilemna.

I love this car to bits, only thing I'd trade it for would possibly be an 03-05 STi. Won't consider a bug STi :p

In its current form (if it had a working gbox), I can accept my car is probably only worth 12-14k tops. I've already put a bit of money into it, and almost have it set up the way I want it in terms of handling and looks... just need the power side of things. After 2 years of owning it, and about 70 000kms, I can say I am happy with the car. I know what has been done to it as I have done most of the servicing/parts fitting etc by myself, with the odd bit of help (borrowing his tools :p) from the old man.

I had planned to simply replace/fix things as they wore down etc, but I am considering doing the lot at once.

I've come to the conclusion that rebuilding & keeping my 5spd is only going to lead to further dramas, and in the long run it will probably be more cost-effective to go with a 6speed. This conversion is worth between $4-6k...

My future plans for the car were to purchase a new 207 and build it steadily, then drop it in once the time came.

But it has occurred to me that it could work out better for me to buy a full GD STi wreck or halfcut, transplant it all myself, and sell whatever I don't need.

Can anyone advise how much I could pick one of these up for and where from?

Cheers,
Jeremy

PM Kris aka SKU81 on rexnet, he brings im heaps of good cuts etc all the time.

You'd prob be looking at $16k for a full JDM car (in cuts with all the parts)

mARC 10-01-2011 07:10 PM

Doug from STechnic deals in front cuts as well as JWS unsure if they stock AUDM though you will need to confirm.

Its worth mentioning that you'd be looking at a fairly recent and complete model for that price ;)

JDM_STYLE 10-01-2011 07:28 PM

Yeah Kris usually brings in fairly newish cars for that price so I'm told.

Strubaru 10-01-2011 07:28 PM

some of kris's prices from back in sept:
just to get an idea on pricing here's a quote from one of kris's threads on ozfoz back in september:

We have sitting in japan atm 4 brand-new sti stripped cars(everything but the shell) but can surply tower cat for extra $500 on top.

1 X 2007 JDM sti 2L complete drive train and some body panels full interior and parts(everything but the shell) $16200 inc GST delivered to Aus(Brisbane)

3 X 2008-2010 JDM sti 2L complete drive trains(same deal as above) $16500 inc gst delivered to Aus(Brisbane)

1 X 2010 JDM sti 2.5Lt sti Auto(i can have the complete running gear(no shell) b4 subaru Aus has 1 here to sell)$16500 inc gst delivered to Brisbane Aus.

Same as the deals above We can do with new foresters,liberty's/legacy's(in ej25T or H6 EZ36R option)Tribeca and so on,complete cars other than the shells starting from $14000 to $16500.

Pre sale to Aus inc freight up the east cost inc in the price and add $500 to the west coast(SA and NT onwards)

Get new cars at a 1/3 of the price and wack it in any shell you want.

(also some time's we may get some very very special cars through) like the track 2007 legacy we have coming in the next container..full sti 2L duel avcs twinscroll motor with full sti drive train(dccd 6sp) and loom and ecu, brembo's 5X114.3 hubs $15300 inc gst.In Brisbane Aus.
This car was built by sti japan for the testing of the jap spec Legacy sti and was never damaged or thrashed as its like new(other than body)

All drive trains brought from new are sold with 6 month warranty.
How hard would it be to splice the loom from a newer model with my existing GC setup???

Who has done a similar conversion...

**edit, found a useful thread on the matter. AM auto over east for the loom.... anyone done this before?

JDM_STYLE 10-01-2011 08:05 PM

Wouldnt Kris include everything including ECU, wiring, dash and interior etc?

RXqME 10-01-2011 08:49 PM

Yep you would more than likely get the wiring loom and ecu, but to me i would rather put a 2nd box in, sell it and buy the 03-05 STI. Seeing as it will cost you $16k for the setup + sale of your car $12k minus cost of 2nd box $1500 gives you $26500 - could get an 03 STI for that or throw in $2k extra for an MY04 STI or $4k for an MY05 STI.

Well thats how i see it!

The Gc would move swiftly with any late model conversion....But $16k!!

There was reliability before 6 speeds.....

Alternately save your bickies, Buy Tidee's 4.44 Sti box & rear diff ($1200).

NEW factory 207 bottom end ($2900 with gaskets),
recon your heads ($1k)
New oil pump ($150)
add an ecu ($1k),
add some cams (<$600)
Add a china spec Td05-18g ($600)
Tune $500........

End result will be a reliable daily with 280-320hp at the hubs.....With the ability to have the wick turned up if you want more grunt.

Plus The motor is brand new.

P.s It will be damn quick!

mARC 10-01-2011 09:26 PM
New oil pump ($150)
Um where and why didn't you mention this earlier :p

Or is that typo for water pump?
