What is the point of this thread?

Best bang for buck for $15k will be something someone else has added an ecu, suspension, turbo etc to and then decided to sell.

Hence the links......

Your not going to build a $15k race car.

If you've got a good shell & $15k to spend to fit it out...Buy the latest front cut you can afford & go from there. Sell what you don't need.

It depends on how much work you can do yourself & how much time you have to build it...Everyone has different mechanical ability.

There's not really much more to discuss is there??

Just my 2c.

If it was me id go the route many others have suggested.
Gc8
207
6 speed
Skids :-)

The idea of a light shell & not crazy hp is a killer combination for a fun toy car.

If i was looking for a quick daily - id go a bugeye sti - not bias - but for the relatively small outlay of cash you get a fun, cheap, capible daily thats still comfortable for peak hour traffic but can still put a girlish smile on your face.

I agree with Ross. With a budget of $15k, I would be looking at GC8's already on the market. Jason's (you can leave it on Corries front lawn for a month), Damo's, Darren's old one posted above if it's still for sale... etc..

I know buying second hand is buying someone elses problems some of the time, but hey, you can only do what is within your budget.

Otherwise, John's suggestion is possible, but none of that includes any labour, tuning time, plus other auxilary/supporting parts you may need along the way, which could cause your project to blow out, or sit incomplete until you can afford to finish it.

I'm heading down this path right now, but I wanted to try and keep within a $10K budget.
Admittedly, I bought a hail damaged MY98 GC8 for $2200. It's been stripped out to save as much weight as easily possible. I still has A/C, stereo etc. A Bond bolt in cage for $1500. The original motor was ok until pushed too hard. It had 165,000km. Spent $4500 on a Ver5 sti front cut and swapped the lot in a weekend including dash and full harness.
Mine is being built primarily with rallying in mind, though I have done a couple of tarmac events. The sti came with close ratios and 4.44 diffs, bigger brakes etc and only just 60,000km on the clock.
Spent another grand on brand new Enkei's and Michelin rally rubber and now it's an absolute hoot! Oh, and it's still fully - and legally - A registered.
Suspension needs work and there are always loads of other mods to do, but I'm currently under $10K and having a blast. Skids-a-plenty.

What is 99% of Perth WRX's membership ?

Daily/semi daily cars that are fun to drive with an odd track day here and there. So I would be thinking along those lines.

There is no real point to the thread, I just thought it would be interesting to see differing opinions.

If it was a dedicated track car you would double the budget at the least.

Buy a tidy late GC with some decent mods & conservative tune...Drive it & enjoy.

**Sorry ninja edit**
Just trying to clarify what I'm gettong at....

You will pay loads more to add parts -after the purchase- so you are better off buying something with suspension, ecu etc, where the previous owner has paid the purchase premium, paid the labour for the install, tune , alignment etc.

/end thread.

Thats one opinion, and a seemingly strong one.
