Oem parts

Hi, guys,

My my09 wrx is close to its 50,000km major service. I don't realy want to go to dealer to do it, as they charge me $600+ for labour.

Hence, I contacted STechnic, and they gave me a much lower quote, $350. Now I need to buy some OEM parts myself.

Apparently, I need to buy oil, oil filter, trans fluid, brake fluid, coolant and diff oil. So far, I have got redline 5w30, k&m filter, castrol syntrax.

Does anyone know where can I buy OEM coolant, brake fluid and diff oil, apart from going to dealer? Which I realy want to avoid.:(

SKYHIONPSI 24-05-2011 09:39 PM

Get some castrol Dot4 brake fluid, 2 bottles should do the trick, maybe a 3rd, but check with Doug on how much he will require.

As for coolant, i would just use any that is green. IMO the subaru stuff is a rip off and any Nulon stuff you can get from supercheap does the same job at a fraction of the price.

Same thing with the rear diff/gearbox oil, i'd ask Doug what he would recommend for your car, then go buy it yourself. I think i have used castrol syntrax/multitrax in one of my foresters before. Worked fine.

Good luck

Rossco 24-05-2011 09:46 PM

Oem = Local dealer.

Wow!..... You are so far off the mark here mate!

Just because a coolant is green doesn't mean squat! there are currently 5 different chemical combinations that are green..... And only two work well with alloy.

Use a quality ethylene glycol coolant if you don't want to buy genuine, but genuine is the best for the long term.

s20525xxx 24-05-2011 10:06 PM

Last time I went to dealer for a oil change, they told me they use syntrax as oem trans fluid, not sure whether it can be used as diff oil.

Mister Two 24-05-2011 10:22 PM

I dont know why people get so annoyed at the price of a quality coolant. People are happy to fork out $60 for 5L of oil that gets changed every 5000km. Yet the same amount for coolant that gets changed maybe once every year or two is somehow a rip off.

The genuine Subaru coolant is good shit. use it.

They are genuine for a reason.

MY00GC8 25-05-2011 06:50 AM

09 wrx has long life coolant , it's dark blue. Doesn't need to be changed for 6 years

MY00GC8 25-05-2011 06:53 AM

And if you want genuine parts come see me at city Subaru

Just man up and get the genuine stuff, ffs its a $50k car and your pissing and moaning about $20 of coolant

Didn't know this. I assume there is no worries using it in older models?
Whats the cost of the long life coolant?

MY00GC8 25-05-2011 07:13 AM

All my 08 models and up use it. Fine to use in older models, as long as you give the cooling system a full flush and there's no other type of coolant in there as it ruins the mixture.
It retails at 100 for 5 liters

opps, I thought it was green.

s20525xxx 25-05-2011 08:17 AM

Genuine it is then.

Thanks for all the helps, guys.

But if it has been flushed does it matter? It's all the same stuff in the one cooling system so it won't be interacting with a different type.

Yes it does.

They are different chemicals.

You don't put red cordial in your gearbox, but both are the same colour?

Incorrect, like Rossco said, just because its green doesn't mean it suitable for Subaru engines. Genuine is really the best option and not that expensive.

Edit: Kato beat me to it

Syntrax is suitable for diffs as well. Probably the best option for Subaru diffs and gearboxes.

Just piss in the radiator after drinking green cordial

If you don't want to spend money looking after your car, you should've got a Hyundai.

I was shocked before, because meville subaru gave me a quote of $1100 for this 50000km service. So I thought I could buy those parts myself.

Then I contact James from city subaru. As it turns out, it was a mistake as they gave me the price for 06 wrx. Now I decide to go to city subaru for this service.

just to clear it up

05 and before wrx price is around 1100
06-08 manual 50,000 $650, automatic $750
08- current M 50,000 $600, auto $700

difference between 06-08 and 08-current being no need for a coolant change due to the long life.
05 and before models you change fuel filters, air filter, spark plugs etc, hence the extra price

red dragon2002 25-05-2011 02:27 PM

Would someone know if it's ok to use toyota red long life coolant? I read somewhere that somebody was using for a subaru. It's just because I have some lying around

MY00GC8 25-05-2011 02:38 PM

I wouldn't risk it, just spend the $60.00 and be safe.

SKYHIONPSI 25-05-2011 02:41 PM

[QUOTE=Kato;569439]Yes it does.

So after flushing my cooling system (along with replacing my radiator) then replacing with a Nulon long-life heavy duty green coolant I'm doing it harm? I don't believe that. Obviously read what is in the coolant first and dont just put any sort of green in there...

RUSSGT 25-05-2011 02:44 PM

^^Na it'll blow up! For sure!

SKYHIONPSI 25-05-2011 02:46 PM

Hell yeah. Glad i don't own that car anymore, dodged a bullet in the end.

Strubaru 25-05-2011 02:47 PM

i use nulon LL too, tastes the same as subaru genuine coolant, doesn't get you as drunk as wild turkey though

 You really have no idea do you mate?

Get ya facts on  read my post in the mechanical thread.

s20525xxx 19-06-2011 06:36 PM

I finally got it serviced at city subaru, $500 with my own oil and filter, and have driven it a few days, super smooth. Thanks, James.
