how much safe boost

hi all i have a 2000 bugeye wrx with big exhaust apart from that its standard just want to know if anyone can recommend the maxium and safest boost i can run it on cheers dave

American Dave 01-07-2011 04:04 PM

I think you have gc8 or classic wrx ?

2 bar or bust

davidy 01-07-2011 04:06 PM

2 bar or bust

i dont understand your comment thanks

Kato 01-07-2011 04:11 PM

There is no such thing as a 'safe boost increase'.

If you have a bugeye, you will need a retune to increase the boost, which will make sure the correct fuelling, timing etc is in place to match the increased boost level.

Search for ECUTek or Verso.

I've 'safely' run 2 bar of boost on a GD wrx as it was tuned accordingly.

davidy 01-07-2011 04:13 PM

thanks

ok thanks for that

Bgwrx 01-07-2011 04:28 PM

you dont have a bugeye if that your car in your display pic. its a gc8. i run 1.5bar in my 99 gc8 with an apexi power fc and breathing mods.

davidy 01-07-2011 04:39 PM

not updated

yeah sorry havnt updated pic sold that car years ago bought a 2000 bugeye last week just wanted a safe boost to run can you tell me how much is 1.5 bar and would you know what factory pound they run without boost control cheers

munya 01-07-2011 04:45 PM

1.5 bar on a bugeye wont be safe unless tuned i am running that in my bugeye but i have a aftermarket ecu and a lot of supporting mods including injectors and fuel pump not worth risking your motor over a little boost..

To convert bar to psi, multiply the value given in bar by 14.50377.

2 bar = 29.00755 psi
1.5 bar = 21.75566 psi

Heres a converter:

http://www.centauro-owners.com/articles/psibar.html

GTB Liberty 01-07-2011 04:53 PM

Google is pretty useful but I'll help here a bit. A bar is an atmosphere at sea level, being 100 kilopascals or approx 14.5 psi.

As such, "smash in 2 bar" means two atmospheres or 200 kpa or 29 psi. This is also, gauge pressure not absolute pressure. Absolute pressure equals atmospheric pressure plus gauge pressure. So, 2 bar equals an absolute manifold pressure of 300 kpa.

I think ...

Stock is approximately 14psi (.9 bar).

DO NOT run more than this without a tune or your dakdak will go BOOM!

P.s it has factory boost control if it's stock.

PPS use the search function, this topic has been covered 100,000,000,000,000 times before.

tuna 01-07-2011 05:47 PM

factory fuel cut is around 1.2 bar of boost

i would recommend an ecu if you want to push it past that.

Kato 01-07-2011 05:51 PM

^^^ In all fairness running more than 1.2/1.3 bar on the stock TD04 hairdryer is a waste of time.

davidy 01-07-2011 06:03 PM

factory psi

ok thanks guys but ive been told not to go past 12 psi to play it safe from a subi mechanic but people are saying factory psi is between 13.5 and 14.5 psi or are they saying thats a safe psi to run i thought factory psi was 8 thats what psi it came out with stock

92 RS 01-07-2011 06:09 PM

thats low as fuck man. im not a bug owner but im fairly sure the factory psi is 14 to 15. maybe someone can post up or direct us to a factory boost list of all WRXs.

EXPLICIT 01-07-2011 06:11 PM

1 bar (14.5psi) is factory. You will require a retune of your ecu or a replacement and an upgraded fuel pump. Tune to a peak of 20psi. The pure physics of the factory turbo (td04) will cause it to taper fairly quickly. This will net you an honest 25% increase in power.

Kato 01-07-2011 06:12 PM
ok thanks guys but ive been told not to go past 12 psi to play it safe from a subi mechanic but people are saying factory psi is between 13.5 and 14.5 psi or are they saying thats a safe psi to run i thought factory psi was 8 thats what psi it came out with stock
A subi mechanic saying 12 psi? They aren't a Subaru mechanic then!

Do not change your boost until you get a tune done. They will set the correct boost for your car.

Stock boost is 14psi peak. Leave it there!

BenWRX 01-07-2011 06:25 PM

I have 2 boost settings, 0.9 and 1.2 bar. 1.2 bar is ample for a td05 even with the supporting mods and tune.

davidy 01-07-2011 06:45 PM

boost controller

the car at the moment has a pink boost controller on it you adjust it by allen key it surges a bit at the moment so i gather it has too much should i turn it down a bit

92 RS 01-07-2011 06:46 PM

got a boost gauge?

Or.. Turn it all the way up and see what happens

davidy 01-07-2011 06:50 PM

no boost gauge

no boost gauge i dont know how to work the controller thanks guys

Srsly? Shut the fuck up man!

davidy: If you don't know what you are doing leave it ALONE!!

johnvk7 01-07-2011 06:55 PM

Factory boost on a bugeye is .87bar or 12.6psi. Boost cut is at 15.8psi. This was the lowest factory target boost of any WRX till the '08 came out, which has a target boost of .78bar or 11.3psi.
You can run whatever you want, with mods to suit.
I'm running 1.5bar in my bugeye all day, everyday, and its done 230000k's

Edit: WHat Rossco said, if you don't know what your doing, DON'T TOUCH IT, take it to a workshop to safely adjust for you

BenWRX 01-07-2011 07:09 PM
Srsly? Shut the fuck up man!
Ha Ha :D

Yep agreed though, leave it alone.

monkeee 01-07-2011 08:09 PM

As said leave it alone if you are worried and then take it to a qualified workshop like All Star Garage or Maximum Motorsport who both are experienced with Subaru tuning and have chat to them about an exhaust + re-tune (bread and butter mod for any wrx these days).

Kato 01-07-2011 11:17 PM

Start budgeting $10k for a new motor to be put in if you are docking around with a boost tee like that b

[REXPLOIT] 03-07-2011 07:02 PM
Start budgeting $10k for a new motor
That's a great number to go with! ;) :icon_flow

Don't turn the boost up. And if you change any engine efficiency... get it re-tuned.

Brent.
:)

WRXMatt 04-07-2011 09:25 AM

Hahaha! Turning up the boost without a boost gauge?? lol,

Get a boost gauge first, see what boost your running on at the moment.

Bruce 04-07-2011 11:04 AM

are you sure its a bugeye and not GC8?

Brett Allan 04-07-2011 11:25 AM
are you sure its a bugeye and not GC8?
He hasn't updated his profile pic, he sold the GC8 the other week and has recently purchased a bugeye :)

DBLDOSE 04-07-2011 02:18 PM

So the general consensus is that 2 Bar is fine, my Bug STi is running 1.5 Bar with the td06, needs a retune soon, considering pushing it up to 2 Bar.

Rexxar 04-07-2011 02:40 PM

I would say so but speak with your tuner if he is ok with it,
Im at 1.7bars atm been like that for over 4 years, using my STI as a daily again max boost is 0-5 psi lol driving like a granny ftw :)
