Default WRX lingo: Beginners guide to it

Hey guys, have searched and looked and chopped and changed pages but thought it not a bad idea to have somewhere that discusses the general terms used here that all the experienced guys may take for granted.

So if you think of any add it here.

To get started here are some ones I need clarification.

What the difference between a gc and a gd? What are they?

What is a EJ207 short? What's the difference to a EJ207?

What makes a set of wheels clear STi brembo brakes?

I'm sure I'll think of more.

GC and GD are the Chassis types, the GC8 was the earlier model from 95-00 (someone will correct me if I am wrong) and the GD is after from 2001-2006. The newer models have a different chassis name, and I am sure someone else can shed light

Best of Luck.

Brett

GC is chasis number of sedans between 93 - 00

GD is chasis number of sedans between 01 - 07

so we refer to GD's and GC's as model's or shapes of wrx's

Brembo brakes are a 4 pot caliper and they are bigger and wider than the wrx brake, so rims need to be a smaller (+) offset usually to clear them

EDIT: Beaten by Brett...

Some more terms and lingo

TBE = Turbo Back Exhaust

CBE = Cat Back Exhaust

TMIC = Top Mount Intercooler

FMIC = Front Mount Intercooler

Classic WRX = 93 - 00 Model

Bug eye WRX = 01 - 02 Model

Peanut WRX = 03 - 05 Model

Pig nose WRX = 06 - 07 Model

Betty = 08 model (some can argue 08 - 11)

My understanding so far is though you can have a normal offset but the rim design affects whether or not it clears the brakes? Wrong?

Have a good read of wikipedia to get most of the info you need.

Start with:

Subaru Impreza WRX STI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and

Subaru Impreza WRX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Answering your questions briefly:

1. A GC is the model from 1993 - 2000 (GF for the wagons). GD is from 2001 to 2007. GH is 2008+ wrx hatchbacks and GR is 2008+ sti widebody hatchbacks.

2. A short motor is just a section of a complete (long) motor. It is basically the guts of the engine block without all the fruit (heads etc).

3. EJ207 refers to a semi-closed deck engine from the STi range. WRX's come with a EJ205 which is open deck. In the newer 2.5L you have a EJ255 in the WRX and a EJ257 in the STi. Both are supposedly semi closed deck I belive.

Have a read of Subaru Impreza WRX STI Forums: IWSTI.com - View Single Post - Subaru 2.5L Engine/Motor Building 101

4. Brembo calipers are bigger and fatter than standard caliper assemblies. So you need a rim that will clear the fatter caliper. This comes down to offset and spoke design. In my opinion there is no hard and fast rule that a certain offset will clear brembos as the spoke design needs to be taken into consideration.

Dok Dok - the sound of a fucked EJ. Commonly associated with big end failure.

Rattle Rattle - the sound of a 5 speed gearbox once broken. Commonly associated with 5 speed gearboxes

Kato - I thought short motor was an engine without accessories - ie block and heads - no air con, sump, ps etc etc attached.
