how to care for my gc8 when not driving it?
Hey guys,
My boyfriends car is sitting at the back of my house with a car cover due to a blown gear box, & a new 6 spd on its way from America, it's going to be sitting there for about a month & was just wanting some useful tips to keep her running fine, while it's not driven for that time?? We have been trying to start it every couple of days, & lost track & left it for about a week without starting her, we started it today & it really struggled & when it did there was alot of black water like substance that came out of the exhaust? what could that be ? Thanks |

first of all.. out the back, in the weather, under a car cover, is not a good move... sand gets under the cover and then the wind blows it all around, and it basically sandblasts your car. Also, the covers can, in extreme heat (and I've seen this happen myself) stick to the paintwork of the car, so when you rip it off, off comes the top layer of clear coat... not fun!
IMO, leave the car in the shade, without a cover on, and wash it regluarly, as if you're driving it. As for the build up of fluid, that's just condensation. I'd just start the car once every second day for 10 mins |

I leave my car at camp for a week each time I goto work, start it when I come back obviously, and never had a problem. Even the same when I was working two weeks away.
The only issues you may run into is the battery dying depending on the age of it. If your battery is old, you can always use a trickle charger but unless your car is parked for months on end, a week between starts will not 'damage' your car. As Kym suggested, your main concern should be keeping the car clean and ensure you give the paintwork a good polish to protect it while it's out there.

Why start it?
Disconnect battery or put on a trickle charger. Allow 6" of dust to cover the car like a boss.

Would not start the car. Disconnect battery. Starting it and letting it idle is way worse than it sitting there.

Why's that, won't all the oils and stuff go bad?

im pretty sure google will find the answers.
there's actually a proper method to use if the car WONT be driven or moved for a period of time. it involves many things - ie car on jacks, tyres off, oils out etc.

I work away, 3 week on- 3 weeks off, and I just disconnect the battery for the weeks away. Starts every time.
When I get back it gets every fluid under the bonnet checked for level and condition. And idle the car warm, maybe 5 minutes to get every thing right up to temp. Like you said its only a month. Leave it uncovered with some sun visors to keep the sun and heat out. Park it in the shade if possible and wash it once a week. Car covers can, and if left long enough will, do nasty abrasive things to the paint work. |
