How do you tell the diffenrence between and genuine and fake sti coupe?

am pretty interested in the car below but am not sure on whether its a genuine STI coupe.

Find Cheap Used & Second Hand Cars For Sale | Brentwood | Gumtree Classifieds

only thing i know is that sti's dont come with fog lamps and it also doesnt have sti rear tail lights.

any help would be appreciated guys as i would like to know what to look for before viewing the car.

Cheers :D

Philbo 23-11-2011 06:19 PM

There were no other coupes bought into AUS that weren't STi.
and it also doesnt have sti rear tail lights.
No AUDM STi's do as far as I know, STI lights don't have the rear fog light which is required by law.

Avalanche 23-11-2011 07:21 PM

Check vin and chassis number

scoobygez 23-11-2011 07:33 PM

Looks like it may of been in an accident..

Ie subaru sticker missing off front slam panel and the fact they have now fitted fogs..

Last 3 digits of vin will be the build number out of 400..
And the adm sti coupe's came with std wrx rear lights.

MISSWRXYSTi 23-11-2011 07:41 PM
There were no other coupes bought into AUS that weren't STi.
Thats what I thought too ?

apg39 23-11-2011 08:02 PM

Maybe they wanted to install foglights?

Jus'sayin.

scoobygez 23-11-2011 08:13 PM

But why peel the official subaru sticker off the slam panel??

Just saying :)

gorotsuki69 23-11-2011 08:26 PM

LOL at all the muppets who bought them above dealer prices when they first came out in 99 thinking they would appreciate in price

johnvk7 23-11-2011 08:26 PM

Check by the VIN. its the easiest way. and correct, only 2 doors officially into aus were STI.
WTF is a slam panel?

scoobygez 23-11-2011 08:38 PM

Slam panel (As I know it) is the front upper/whole front panel at the front of the car that everything fits upto/onto....

mARC 23-11-2011 08:39 PM
WTF is a slam panel?
I'm going to assume fenders which is ironic as they're the most cosmetic part of a factory body.

scoobygez 23-11-2011 08:44 PM

Front slam panel

fobz 23-11-2011 08:51 PM

Rear wiper. Can be fitted to a WRX, but its a pain for very little gain so
unlikely an STI faker will have one.

^^ This is totally incorrect!!

ALL the GC STI's (maybe 10?) I've looked at had no similarities in the last 3 vin digits.

Plus there were 1000 STI ra coupes alone....Pretty hard to get 1000 out of 3 digits.....

For the record my Version 6 vin ends in 773 yet the build number is 111/400.

Top lock panel is Aus.

scoobygez 23-11-2011 09:58 PM

Ahh ok that was my understanding of the v5 coupe..

How do v5 sti owners find out the build number out of the 400 that australia got then? or is it a case of they dont as it could be one of the 5000 or so worldwide??

Top lock will remember that for future referance

Yep.
THe last 6 digits are actually just a sequential number of production, so it really means nothing, just the number off the production line. It identifies the particular car as an individual part of a model run but its the 8 letters and numbers before that, that tell you what model it is.

There should be a little number plate on the centre console that says
number ***/400

scoobygez 23-11-2011 10:04 PM

Just found out version 5's were never officially numbered people just go off the last 3 digits on rexnet v5 count, to try and find them all...

Find out the VIN and match, using this link.

Which Car is a WRX STi

scoobygez 23-11-2011 10:29 PM

Just went through the 26 pages on rexnet regarding V5 sti coupe register (adm) and virutally all of them are accounted for between the numbers of 002-399.

Thats going off the last 3 digits of the vin...

Rossco 23-11-2011 10:35 PM

Better to go off the applied model code on the plate mounted to the passanger side strut tower:

That's mine - the second line is the applied model code GC8HKED = Sti Vi (or P1 if we were in the UK)

Coupe Sti Version 5 has the applied model of GC8F2DD

Coupe Sti version 5 has the applied model code of GM8GKED and the 153 is going off the last 3 digits of same vin plate :)

4 doors have gc8 ;)

GM8GKED is part of the vin # and NOT the applied model code (the applied model code is not part of the VIN number)

look at the photo I posted, the part that you have quoted as GM8GKED is GC8KDGY in my vin #.

The applied code is the 7 digits below the vin.

That is all.

scoobygez 23-11-2011 11:03 PM

No the number I quoted is the applied model (GM8GKED) number :)

Vin number is JF1GM8KD3XG002153 :)

There is no gc8 in the coupe just gm8 :)

Anyway back on topic :)

Are you gonna go check it out and post up about it?

it looks tidy...

ImPreSiV 23-11-2011 11:22 PM

Was the first thing I took off my RA. Such a tacky looking sticker.

Kato 24-11-2011 08:58 AM

V5 have a central tacho?

Coz that one doesn't...

ImPreSiV 24-11-2011 09:10 AM

car has probably been in a front end collision. Explains the foglights and no sticker on the 'slam panel' as we are apparently calling it these days.. might have been easier to source fog lights than sourcing covers at the time during repair.

teejay 24-11-2011 09:11 AM

I thought it would have been 10 times easier to fit nothing if its been in an accident

Only jap spec 180kph dash has the centre tach. All adm have centre speedo.

Possibly drawing a pretty long bow there. Could be a guy who did country runs and liked the extra light. ???

Is also missing STI badges off front guards, but still doesnt mean its a fake one.

Just go and have a look and if you arent sure, get an expert to look at it. Price seems decent.

Blaise, I like drawing a long bow :P More and more badges etc missing from the front end of this car... starting to look like a possibility :P

Riggs 24-11-2011 09:42 AM

No doubt its an STI, AUDM 99 STI's and JDM 98 STI were 2 door.

Check for crash damage, if its straight I don't see why would you worry. Its never going to be a collectors item. Whatever people think makes it special for being a 2 door is gone as soon as you mod it anyway.

GreyWolf 24-11-2011 12:10 PM

cheers for all the help guys, much appreciated :)

QFT, unless the car is completely original, and travelled less then 40000k's they don't really seem to be holding much value these days.
