Default NEW B - 08 exhaust advice

Hey guys

long time reader first time poster

I've just upgraded from my lightly modified bug eye to a stock 08 hatch and was after some current advice to morph my 'girls car' as my gf refers to it as into something a little more manly

first step: exhaust
It seems xforce and turboxs are the go to places? basically I'm looking at a ss cat back system and would like to spend between 600-1000, It seems fitting is easy enough on most systems but any tips and advice would be much appreciated.

cheers

If thats your budget then yes, those brands or one of the Ultrex/STechnic exhausts will do the job too.

If you want to un-hairdresser the stock Betty hatch then I would say try to get yourself an STi wing for it, lower it, fix the bodyroll/understeer, and I know the flamethrower will come for this, but a good set of mudflaps and some nice wheels wont hurt either

Welcome mate Im in the same boat with hatch and SyncSubaru is bang on the money. Don't limit yourself with cat back. Go the hole hog and get a TBE. A couple of tuners have told me they can safely get up to 30% more out of the car.
There great cars and yer you'll cop a lot of Shit about it. Especially from your misses. But she can always walk!?

Could always try a diff back if you just want a bit more sound, shouldn't cost more than $300 to $400 (depending on material choice for muffler, e.g. stainless steel verses steel), won't be as loud or as deep as the cat back.

You could also go down the path of TBE/retune but this will blow the budget.
Factor $1000 minimum for a TBE and at least $1100 minimum for a retune.

This was a retune of another members MY08 WRX.

Handling.
Betty was all over the place, too much roll and felt like it wanted to kick me out the door when taking corners at a reasonable pace.

Sway bars, Whiteline lowering springs, rolle centre kit and a set of decent sticky tyres made for a substantial change in handling.

Didn't touch the brakes or power aspects of the car at all.

Hey guys

Thanks for the feedback, totally agree after a new exhaust, wing, wheels, grill, she will look the part... unfortunately the budget is pretty tight as I'm also saving for a trip, I figure If I buy online and got my buddy to instal it I would make a bit of a saving

xforce do the full stainless steel cat back single out for $856 (apparently an easy bolt on?)

I would love a tbe and ecutek tune but at this stage just after a small gain and a bit more of a rumble from under the hood

anyone have any reports on the Invidia Q300?

cheers

Have a chat with Rob @ Ultrex, I reckon for a few bucks more you could get a full turbo back, then just fit the cat back section. Then you'll have the dump pipe ready to fit when funds are available to tune. That's what I've done.

Installation shouldn't be too hard, should be able to do it quite easily with 2 people, some jack stands or a hoist and the right tools.

Should go something like this...
  • place on hoist or jackstands
  • soak bolts/nuts in WD40
  • loosen everything up
  • remove muffler from rear hangers and remove it
  • remove centre pipe and everything up to the downpipe (will need to remove the rear O2 sensor as well)
  • do the above steps backwards (with the new exhaust)
  • leave everything loose until you are happy that it all fits up
  • start tightening up
  • start the car up and check for exhaust leaks
  • remove jackstands or remove from hoist

Pretty much what I did when I helped a mate do his exhaust a while back, pretty easy as you don't have to replace the downpipe at this stage.

Not a bad idea in practise, but possibly not feasible for the owner at this point in time.
Gives you plenty of time to speak to a couple of tuners and get all the answers to any questions you may have before making a choice on who will work on the car!

Guessing that the Ultrex cat back section will be 3" diamater and won't fit up to the stock downpipe without an adapter?
