was an ex 86 wait list customer. found the engine quite revvy and quite nimble handling but lacked the torque of the turbo being an NA etc.

every man and his dog are modding the hell out of them to make up the power/torque, but you will find most of those that dont have come from much lower torque/powered cars. going from any turbo almost to one of these you tend to get dissappointed when you bury your right foot.

turbo needed.

Drove an 86. Loved the seats, the looks, the direct steering, and i didn't even mind the interior.

But coming from an sti it's hard to get excited about 140kw.

Looks great. Platform is great, but $40k can buy a very nice second hand STI. They are all second hand once they leave the showroom.

"Affordable" RWD sports car = $45-50k with $150kw? I'd feel a little ripped off buying one at that price. Rather get one when they become much cheaper (i.e. $20k).

Also anyone who thinks the TRD spoiler on the 86 variant looks great must be blind....it screams chargespeed/qantas wing. Needs it to contain the sheer amount of "torque" going through the rear wheels no doubt (and as I say that I know some owners here in WA have them....christ).

Potential is there but a factory turbo would be pretty handy. Even if it's a TD04...

NZ gets this TRD 86... IMO it looks pretty awesome and has some good bits to it as well... but the price ~$64,000 NZ

The NZ TRD one looks nice, too bad about the price tag for it though, only 20 made...would fetch a nice price re-selling it too I would assume.

I've owned 3x GC8's (modded & stock), modded VE SS from new and many other stock shit cars.
Personally the 86 is my favourite car that I have owned.
Do I miss the midrange and boost, for sure! But I have learnt to get over it fairly quickly after driving it for a while. I find the handling MUCH better than the wrx's I have owned and personally I find this car so much fun to drive around on the street.

It's no traffic light racer at all, but as far as the comment above about "getting flogged by a mx5"... Yeah nah.

Above 5000rpm it pulls fine but its getting it there that is what most turbo owners hate. The thing with this car is that driving it for a test drive doesn't allow you to appreciate what has gone into the car. The gearing is perfect for the street (you can drive it around at low rpm fine, or rev it out where you want) it handles really well from stock, everything seems to be in the right position when you're sitting in the drivers seat (ie: shifter, handbrake, indicators all seem close but not intrusive) and a heap of other things that many probably couldn't care less for, but I like.

The car was never initially designed to come out with a turbo and awesome interior. It was designed as a budget, lightweight car that has ALOT of potential to be modified. Be it turbo kits, s/c kits, suspension, rims etc etc etc
Read up on the FA20 and you will see that the motor has been designed to handle some decent mods even with the high compression.

I might be biased because I own one, but I'm certainly not trying to justify my purchase to make others happy.
For me, this car is excellent and ALOT of fun.
