Default Timing belt swap,every 100,000?

Ive been looking at numerous WRX's for weeks and the one I finally like has done 123,000 ,its a 2001 model, im reading online these belts need changed every 100,000km.

The guy says hes had it a year and wasn't able to find out if the previous owner swapped out the Timing Belt , so Im now thinking if I buy this car then chances are the belt has not been swapped.

So I assume it will be costly to get done and the purchase of the car alone will empty my bank account, how much does it usually cost to get that belt replaced?..... HELP

Not exactly sure but it is also a GREAT idea to replace the water pump while it's all apart. Have a search and you'll see that most people replace timing belts between 80,000-100,000km and water pumps before 150,000kms. Better for peace of mind.

Not to costly, normally you would get a genuine timing belt kit which includes belt, tensioner ad all idlers, I would recommend doing the idlers. If te water pump isn't leaking or noisey then leave it alone. If your paranoid like I'm I'd replace it. Kit is roughly 700-800 dollars and labour about 2-3 hours. Dealership will bend you over all nice like on price. So talk to people like stechnic, Mao or tony flood for a good price

Can someone answer this one?= how come I see so many WRX on gumntree that have only done ,say 160,000 or so and have just had a motor rebuild?. Do the Boxter's only last this long?, my 180SX has racked up 250,000km and it still has good compression and good leakdown test results.

EJ20's can last double that if they are looked after properly, maintained, not absolutely thrashed. Sure, some come with factory defects etc and some just have bad luck, but in general, they will last into 300k+.

A well looked after 2l will last a fair while bit that depends on alot of things as with other cars, too much boost, poor tuning(if any) and How it's been driven. A ej257(2.5l) are a little weak but That's because people don't tune them when thu modify them

what are the ej257 ( 2.5) motors in?, the 2001 + models perhaps??.

This is the one I drove today, everything looked brand new and drove MINT! but will need that Timing Belt changed, tyres and rego, so far was the best one I'd seen. I guess I'd be pushing my luck driving about for a while with the belt not being changed at the current 123,000k mark?.

I can see to get the timing belt/idlers etc sorted out will be another $1000+ after labour costs factored in

Most do the whole Job, Belt tensioner, idlers and Water pump
The worst thing is doing only the belt and four months after the water pump craps out then you be looking at big money if the engine overheats.

Thats what I thought, and why I sadly had to knock it back ,I was extremely disappointed after he told me that he didn't know if the belt had been done.It was traded in at a car yard and that's where the current owner bought it only 1 year ago, when it was at the car yard it had 103,000km on the clock. He says they couldn't get in contact with the previous owner to ask if he had changed the belt before he traded it in.

The current owner paid $14,000 for it a year ago
