Get the car u really want and save up to do the belt. Out of all the things that go wrong with subarus, busted timing belt isn't a common problem and I'm sure many people do 200k plus on them. My last bunky had 250k on the belt when I sold it! ( not recommending u leave it this long)

either get the car to a subaru specialist and get them to check the car out, or pull the timing off on the left hand side of the motor( pretty sure four 10mm bolts ) and inspect the belt, see if theres marking still on the belt

I'm pricing up the Timing belt kit and hope to get one soon( sooner the better) ,My WRX seems to be quite thirsty??, I drove it to work and back really quite slowly indeed and the Fuel Gauge was on 3 quarters in the morning then after I got home the gauge had gone down to just above half a tank ( it was about 70km of driving).

I need some help=

1)I cant for the life of me zero the Trip Meter??!
2) Im getting an annoying loud noise from the back of the car as you drive along and gets louder the faster you go, its hard to tell if its diff noise( please no!), wheel bearings or just shitty tyres being loud?.
3)anyone know the cheapest place to get a decent quality Timing Kit?.
4) I am new to WRX and need to change the oil, I rang MAXIMUM MOTORSPORT and they said to use a full synthetic 0-40!?? is that not way too thin a viscosity??,in my 180SX I was using 10- 50 and I need the part number for an oil filter.

Any Help Much appreciated................Scott

Subaru do a genuine timing belt kit, can't get much better than genuine
15208aa100 is genuine oil filter part number I'm pretty sure
10w30 is what I would use in your car

congrats mate, i recon thats a bargain, you would have been taking the piss trying to get it cheaper

1) hold the trip reset button in
2) suspect bearings
3) rising sun subaru, search, about 500 for full kit (belt/tensioner/idlers/water pump/crank seal)
4) get genuine, ryco etc are shit for wrx's & same price as genuine

edit:

just checked, maybe just grab these 2 kits off kris, he's on here somewhere & doesn't mind shipping interstate, its worth doing the upper engine cleaner before you drop the old oil

service kit

inc

-upper cyl cleaner

-oil filter and crush washer

-5L Subaru oil

-fuel additive

-washer bottle additive

$88 each kit
-----------------------------------

Timing belt service kit

-TB Kit

-water-pump

-water pump gasket

-thermostat with seal

$555 each kit

Congrats on the purchase. First thing you need to do is check the log book and if a service hasnt been done do that. Change the oil, filter, inspect the brakes and brake fluid, check the coolant, check the transmission and diff fluid and of course rectify the the knocking sound that you have described.

See you on the track!

Cheers for the info guys, VERY helpful=
Brakes have just had new pads put in.
There is no service book unfortunately.
I'll check everything I can on the weekend or before if time permits!?.

The noise from the back isn't knocking its like a loud rubbing type noise, A friction sounding noise that I'm suspecting is wheel Bearings?. Are they a pain to change out in the Subaru's?

ARRRRGGHHH I have the worst luck with cars

I tried to remove that Timing belt cover just for a look at the condition of the belt, I got 1 bolt out but the others will not come out = the nuts on the back side are turning in the plastic!!??. God knows how I'll be able to get the belt changed if those nuts wont come out.

The WRX seems excessively thirsty as well, Ive been taking it real easy all week and rarely boosting at all and you can pretty much watch the fuel guage drop as you drive along!?. Its had some ECUTEK tune by the previous owner and I rang the mob that did the tune to ask if it was an aggressive type tune and they said" no not really but most folk who get a tune don't worry about fuel consumption".

I want to get the map changed to make it more economical as it wont be racing anyways, what do you think I'd be charged to get it tuned to be more fuel friendly?....
