Default Ultrex TBE MY06 - how loud?

I'm looking at buying one of Ultrex's TBE 3" systems for my MY06 wagon and I'm wondering how loud these are, from anyone who has used one.

Their ad on eBay (current special price) says the "drift spec style muffler" has a removable silencer. My stock system is nice and stealthy, so I'm not wanting anything too loud, but the option to open it up when not on a public road would be welcomed.

The sale price ends in next day and I'm trying to decide between buying a used stock system and this. Any thoughts would be welcomed?

Avoid the cannon type mufflers, and go for the oval shape if you want it a bit quieter.

Also good idea to get it tuned at the same time, so factor that into your decision making.

Tuning not a cost consideration as I'm doing that myself.

At the price they're asking maybe I go for the full system and then change the muffler and sell off the cannon?

I know how to fit it, I have a reasonable handle on open source tuning, I was asking about the sound level of a specific exhaust system.

It's not like I was asking what it would do for my performance, or assuming I was going to get some ridiculous level of gains without making any tuning changes.

Simple question.

And thanks for the sound effects lesson.

As said. Oval over cannon for less noise. I have been in the Ultrex owner's car which is fitted with the Ultrex TBE from memory and it wasn't overly loud normal driving though that too was an oval system, not the cannon one which is as you said on special.

Going off your location, why not give Hi-tech mufflers a try? They are very very high quality and not overly loud at all (again, the oval shape). They are expensive as hell though unless you just buy the diff-back off them for the noise and source the rest of the exhaust elswehere.

SUBARU Impreza WRX/STI STI Turbo Back System 06-07 (STREET)

Other than that an oval Ultrex TBE ($799) or Turbo XS oval TBE ($1k) are cheaper but still quality alternatives.

Happy modding

Thanks Monkee,

As you say Hi-Tech are a bit rich for my budget for a full TBE. Ironically it's the front sections of my stock exhaust that have deteriorated and the diff-back is fine. But if I'm going to replace the down and mid pipes I might as well got to a 3" and then take advantage of the extra flow with a retune.

I got a response from Ultrex, they say the Cannon system is fairly quiet with the silencer in place and all reviews I have seen to date appear positive, so I think I'll go for their package.

Interestingly the direct price on Ultrex's website, plus shipping to Sydney is cheaper than their eBay price which includes postage, (maybe due to the commission that eBay take) so I'll buy direct.

Thanks again to all for your input.

I have the Oval style TBE on my piggy. Its gives a good sound, but isn't stupidly loud. I have mates that aren't into cars who have driven behind me, past me, listen to it idle and all of them have mentioned how its not overly loud but gives a good tone. However when I wind it up its pretty loud like any 3" TBE.
