GC8 exhaust

Hi guys,

I wanted an opinion on a turbo back exhaust for my version 6 Sti...I really like the classic rumble sound of the boxer exhaust but it seems like the 2 most recommended exhausts (performance wise) are the butler and the hitech but from the couple of youtube clips I've seen they don't seem to have the classic rumble of the boxer that I've heard from other Rex's I've seen on the road ... What would you guys recommend? Is the performance of other brands comparable to these? By the way, my car is completely stock but I've got a new powerfc, CAI, and wallbro fuel pump ready to be installed and tuned at ASG...

By the way I want an exhaust that doesn't drone (search button has suggested not to get a canon!)

Thanks in advance!

Here's RJ999s Invidia N1 Racing. Is this the sort of thing you are after?

Although I like the sound, it's not the classic boxer exhaust noise...I may pop over and hear it in person...

Butler will give you the "classic sound" + quality....

Hey Bud,

I have a 3 inch canon XForce exhaust. I'm pretty chuffed with it! My mate hooked me up with a really good price. Then we fitted it ourselves!

PM me if you want to have a looksee and listen!

Cheers

I have a Hitech on my classic, it does not drone, it does rumble,
it is not a quiet exhaust but legal.
I do not see how an exhaust can stop the rumble, maybe if it is very quiet,
it is equal length headers that eliminates the classic rumble.

Hey mate... Version 6 in blue steel (I own one too) my absolute favorite.
I have a Hitech exhaust... they are a bit on the expensive side but it does not drone at all!!!! It has the perfect amount of burble but isnt too loud and in your face either.
There are cheaper systems out there but I just love the build quality and sound of the Hitechs.

Varex. You can shut the system up when cruising. I have one, at 110 driving country roads the drone is gone and its quiet like a corolla.
Drop me a line and you're welcome to meet somewhere to see/hear it.

I'm sure someone on here has a butler built on a GC8, great sound IMO, not loud or droning, have to hear it on a GC8 because the sound changes slightly for GD and a fair bit from '08 on, and has to be in person, microphones ruin good sounds

Kiiz 19-12-2013 10:57 PM

i had a decatted butler exhaust on my first version 6 and it sounded amazing up top of the rev range. now i have a custom china exhaust on my current version 6 and still love the sound, doesnt sound as good as the butler admittedly.

i think the deeper classic boxer sound your looking for comes from a mild steel exhaust...?

Sammy82 19-12-2013 11:19 PM

Thanks for the replies everyone... I think I am leaning towards the hitech to be honest. Its difficult to find exhaust clips on youtube for butler and hitech on the gc8. I think the general consensus is that I can't go wrong with either...

VUSSUTE 20-12-2013 12:03 AM

go the hitech mate, its a bit more expensive, but its top quality. Mine is 8 years old, and no corrosion, no nothing. And its the perfect amount of noise without being "defectable"

Seeing as my mods will be a TBE, CAI, fuel pump upgrade and a tune, do you guys think I will need a turbo timer? If so, what turbo timer would you guys recommend for a gc8?

Kiiz 30-12-2013 11:12 PM

No turbo timer. Get a 3 port boost solenoid instead.

You don't need a turbo timer, gc8 turbos are water cooled not oil cooled. Just don't be thrashing your car and turning it off instantly..

Thats funny, try running one without oil, then YOU tell the Guy how to drive, lol. Need has nothing to do with practically any mod we do, it's WANT. Unless you are in Canberra and you want to securely (locked) warm the car up in the driveway to crack the ice off the windscreen and finish your coffee whilst its -5deg C outside.

He asked if he needs a turbo timer, he doesn't. If he wants to waste his money buying one sure go right ahead.

Bruno 31-07-2016 07:28 PM

As above the stock turbos are water and oil cooled/lubricated, I think this is the case for most of the vf series, if you have changed to a oil only turbo running it once stopped is the right thing to do, this can be done with a turbo timer or by just sitting in the car for 30-60 seconds then locking and leaving

Hilarious Imprezive, you are still saying he "NEEDS" a TBE, CAI, Fuel Pump and a Tune...he doesn't. Kiiz recommended an alternate modification and thats constructive, you might want to suggest a flare kit and a big ass spoiler. Its subjective.

I havn't said he needed any of those things? All I've said is that turbo timers are a waste of money which seems to of upset you enough to dig up this thread from 2 years ago...

maddog 01-08-2016 06:58 PM

What if he wants to turn his car off immediately when he stops...I inferred from your comment that a TT is then essential? Two years on it is still subjective 😜.

Sammy82 09-09-2016 10:00 PM

To complete this thread, I ended up getting a single tip hitech TBE about 2yrs ago...very happy with the sound. Classic boxer rumble without being too loud and no drone.
