Flares

Saw these pop up on Pro Speed Racing.

What do we think?
The GC ones look the best out of any I've seen so far.

Would need to be running serious tyres or offset to fill them though!
I think Simon has done something similar with flares from another supplier.

Something looks wrong about those flares in the first pic (grey gc8). The flares just... I dunno... can't put my finger on it... look cheap shit perhaps??

Kiiz 24-03-2014 12:08 PM

id be concern about what ud need to chop off to get those two pieces on the rear doors? its hard to make it work with the 4 drs i rkn because that door gets in the way.

grey gc looks mint minus skull sticker on back window haha

Kiiz,
As the rear part is 2 piece (whole kit is 6 piece - 2 front and 4 rear), it doesn't get in the way of the doors, one piece stays on the door and one piece bolts to the back part which allows the door to open fine....pulled this info from the ABW website... ABWMOTORSPORT SUBARU BODYKITS
I'm assuming one would need to cut existing flare/guards then fit those?
I wonder who is going to be game to try 18x10.5+ wheels with flares...not me lol

yeah i know that its a 6 piece.. whats the point of sticking these pieces on the doors without trimming to get more clearance? so you would need to trim the doors which is what i said id be concerned about haha

Flares are for extending the wheel arches so crazy offset and/or wide tyres don't protrude too far from body...

oh sorry do they just bolt over the stock fenders? i was under the impression that the installation would be along the lines of this, which looks like hell

^

It's purely dependent on the kit, and what tyre/rim combo you're using.

That guy is trying to run 18x10 tyres on a GC.... Bloody yanks!

Yes the ones in my link are only only bolt on.
You could still go to town with an angle grinder if you wanted to though lol

RJ999 24-03-2014 05:42 PM

^Would you still need to drill bolt holes on your existing fender though? or they just glue on?

Jezza 24-03-2014 05:47 PM

I would say they need rivets or nuts & bolts.
Could probably get away with mounting tape, but it's gonna wreck your panel and paint either way if you wanted to remove them again

RJ999 24-03-2014 06:15 PM

What I make out of all of this is: if one is decided on flares+big wheels/tyres, one has pretty much given up on their stock fenders, it'll be either wrecked or chopped, and flares will have to stay on for good.

Tony 24-03-2014 07:41 PM

Yes. Your dreaming if you think you could add something like that without having to chop or drill your fenders.

RJ999 24-03-2014 07:56 PM

You're still considering karlton flares then or gave up on it? lol

Tony 24-03-2014 08:09 PM

Eventually. When i have a spare 5grand+ to do it properly.

RoughStilin 25-03-2014 03:13 PM

Jezza, forget the flares mate way too much work to do it, which would I believe necessitate an engineer sign off to make it legal. I'm running 18X10 on the wagon with 285 tyres & I had to cut a good 40mm pretty much all the way around the wheel arches to give enough clearance. My wheels stick out 68mm more than the standard outer like of the guard.

Bigger wheels also mean more load on wheel bearings, more load on driveline components, etc, etc. Just get a set of nice wheels, with the correct offset to fill the standard guards comfortably.
