I used to have a cat. Then I put a Bee*R two step ignition cut rev limiter on and this happened. The cat is now no longer a problem.

I too used to have a cat, before anti lag...

The way I see it is that yes, it may shorten the life of components with excessive use, and such components might be costly, but then again, the whole build process was costly, so in the scheme of it, a set of headers or a turbo aren't that big a deal. So I will continue to flick the boom switch every now and then, just because.
