Thinking of buying bugeye STi - anyone know the car?

hey gang it's me again. I can't stay away from a wrx for very long, it's like an addiction
anyway, i'm thinking of using my september bonus to get back into a wrx
in particular, this STi:

2002 WRX STi Subaru Good Cond $11,000 | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Canning Area - Bentley | 1052380097

it's pretty much my maximum budget. does anyone know it? not many bugeye STi's around

Brett Allan 04-09-2014 11:05 PM

Been for sale for ages...

Looks fairly tidy for the kms.

Would be getting a reputable workshop to do a pre-purchase if you are serious about it.

There is a mint blue Bug STI with 70kkms however, it's double the budget :(

wrxwgn 05-09-2014 07:48 AM

I was going to buy this sti but the owner was always busy.

thehowlfactor 05-09-2014 08:48 AM

This is available. Rego expires in 2 weeks so a reduced offer might be accepted. Owner is a member too.

Just called him, apparently it's no longer for sale.. Sigh

I think this one has an STi motor in it. The owner want sure.. Can anyone tell from the pics? Anyone know the car?

joshwrx 06-09-2014 12:15 PM

I might be wrong to say this but isn't it an sti motor as it has the red intake manifold?

That's what I was thinking...

joshwrx 06-09-2014 12:18 PM

Hopefully someone can confirm but I reckon it is sti

Did he buy it with sti motor? Surely there is papers somewhere?? Like rego paper? As vin plates won't match the sti engine number
That's what I was thinking...
Wouldn't trust it on manifold alone, a can of VHT Wrinkle Red is all it takes to make a WRX manifold into an STI one.
Wouldn't trust it on manifold alone, a can of VHT Wrinkle Red is all it takes to make a WRX manifold into an STI one.
agreed. so what's the easiest way to determine if it's an STI motor or not?

Tony 06-09-2014 04:40 PM

Motor serial number. Dont rush, buy a legit sti.

astralex 06-09-2014 04:43 PM

Crinkle paint red, a few coats later you've got a red STi manifold. So no, just because the intake manifold is red, is it an STi motor.

EDIT: Oh my bad, didn't see a second page to this thread, explaining exactly what I just said hours before I said it. Move along, nothing to see here.
Motor serial number. Dont rush, buy a legit sti.
Yeah I was thinking that - i'm not in any great rush.
I'm just not sure I can fit an actual sti into my budget of 10k :)

Yeh i hear ya.. to be fair the seller is not advertising it as an STi motor.. he just doesn't know that much about his own car and his words were "yeh apparently its an sti engine i'm not really sure". When driving the thing, it felt loads quicker than a wrx with just an exhaust and tune.

Tony 06-09-2014 07:24 PM

It is cranking 19psi. Does he know who did the tune? You could try ringing around afew of the tuners and telling them the lisence plate number. Maybe one of them has it on the system and will be able to give you some of the history.

Pimpreza 06-09-2014 07:25 PM

Much more than just an engine to an 02 STI, you've got more aggressive computer, Brembo's, 6 speed, way better suspension, hood scoop, interior bits and the all important VIN plate, might be worth waiting for one to pop up.

nick73 06-09-2014 07:32 PM

MMS tuned it, it says so on the dyno sheet. Just wait for an STi and save a bit more coin while you wait.

Tony 07-09-2014 09:21 AM

Didnt even look haha. Ring MMS and ask them what the deal was when they tuned it. 19psi on the standard 205 seems rather high.

dnbosiris 07-09-2014 10:43 AM

found a nice wrb bugeye STi, going to look tomorrow. stay tuned ;)

DukeDrifter 08-09-2014 12:48 PM

Saw the silver one at the shops today it's pretty rough, looks like possible hail damage

dnbosiris 08-09-2014 01:46 PM

You talking about this one?
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/joondalup/cars-vans-utes/wrx-sti-brembos-6-speed/1053942920

DukeDrifter 08-09-2014 10:18 PM

haha na the one with cel xxx plates and its not that bad but looks faily dimpled close up

dnbosiris 09-09-2014 04:50 PM

Guys do you think 13.5k is a reasonable price for an 02 sti with 176k in the clock and just an exhaust?

I think so - how does the car look? If it's in good condish, with some service history, no accidents, genuine owner etc, for that price, could be a goer.

Depends on the condition its in. FSH?

dnbosiris 09-09-2014 07:18 PM
Depends on the condition its in. FSH?
stone chips on front bonnet (normal), normal wear and tear inside, but some strange quite obvious marks on the pillar and rear quarter panel. looks like its maybe had vinyl wrap in the past and someone's gone to remove it with a stanley knife.

mechanically seems OK, engine was rebuilt 5 thou kays ago by an unknown mechanic. drives as you'd expect.

anyway, i'm checking out another one shortly owned by a certain scooby mechanic.. :D
