unless you put a box around it. Dont know if its worth the effort though compared to a pannel filter. Depends which ones better.

im just gona install a cold air intake system n leave in stock filter, maybe later on down the track get a better pannel filter, apexi seams to be the way to go since there are so many threads atm about this and lots of ppl are saying K&N hav too much oil in them and can lead to things u dont want to kno about...

ok so i have a K&N panel filter in my my06 n/a? i dont really want a f*cked AFM, so do i ditch it and put the stock-o back on? or get a blitz panel filter or something else?

and PS: good work on the mod! let me know how thorttle response is once u get it all goiN!

This bbs.legacycentral.org forum thread is a good read on what is actually restrictive in the intake airflow.

In summary: stock filter is a tiny factor in the total restriction, so don't bother, just get rid of the resonator assembly and feed the stock airbox with a good bellmouth in the wheel arch/cold air area, done.

Make sure you bellmouth the intake like blackmy03 said, or you're probably adding restriction not fixing it. I used a speaker port from Jaycar for a perfect fit to the airbox, I can dig up the thread with pics and details if there's interest.
